Voting for America was created in 2008 as an affiliate of Project Vote, the now defunct left-of-center organizing group. The organization shared an address with Project Vote, and until 2015 the organization was led by Project Vote president, Michael Slater. 
In 2016, Voting for America’s name was changed to the Voter Registration Project, and the organization’s board of directors and leadership was replaced.  Only the organization’s nonprofit status and employer identification number remained the same.
