History and Leadership
Princeton Area Community Foundation was founded in 1991 by a group of central New Jersey residents who awarded grants to nonprofits in Central New Jersey. Gradually families established donor funds with the Princeton Area Community Foundation and other nonprofit organizations joined Princeton Area Community Foundation, entrusting the organization with their endowments. 3 The foundation’s grants often seek to build and identify the next generation of leaders and are commonly focused in central New Jersey. 4

Sonia Delgado is Princeton Area Community Foundation’s board chair. Previously she was a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Jersey Initiatives Advisory Committee. 7

The foundation strives towards a critical race theory-influenced concept of “equitable community,” 9 provides services for donors and philanthropists to develop their philanthropic plans, 10 and funds scholarships and grants for students in the Princeton, New Jersey area. 11
Grantmaking
In 2021, Princeton Area Foundation distributed $18,268,610 in grants. 12 These grants are issued through different operating endowed funds within the broader Princeton Area Community Foundation. These funds include the Princeton Area Community Foundation Future Fund, various donor-advised funds, designated funds, field of interest funds such as the Fund for Women and Girls, 13 and the NextGen Giving Circle Fund. 14 15 Princeton Area Community Foundation is also an active grantmaker through Greater Mercer Grants. 16
Princeton Area Community Foundation’s New Jersey Arts and Cultural Renewal Fund has sponsored a play supporting the far-left Black Lives Matter movement. 17
In 2021, Princeton Area Community Foundation’s grants included $450,000 to the Foundation for Educational Administration, $362,531 to Planned Parenthood of Northern Central and South New Jersey, $306,000 to Arm in Arm, $119,400 to Every Child Valued, $80,000 to the Fair Share Housing Center, $80,000 to NEO Philanthropy, $40,200 to Doctors Without Borders, $40,000 to the Tides Foundation, $25,000 to Bard College, $25,000 to Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, $24,150 to the national Planned Parenthood Federation of America, $17,200 to the Environmental Defense Fund, $16,750 to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) New Jersey Chapter, $15,750 to the Greenpeace Fund, $14,786 to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), $12,500 to left-wing DC Justice Lab, $10,200 to the ACLU Foundation New York, $10,000 to the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and $6,100 to Oxfam America. 18
In 2020, the Princeton Area Community Foundation made $16,698,622 of grants. Grant recipients included Alliance for Global Justice, AAAS, ACLU New Jersey, ACLU New York, American Friends Service Committee, Boys and Girls Club of America, Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton, Doctors Without Borders, Equal Justice Initiative, Immigration Services and Legal Advocacy, Institute for Educational Leadership, Interfaith Social Services, National Indian Youth Leadership Project, Pennsylvania Innocence Project, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, left-of-center Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, left-of-center Social Good Fund, and others. 19
In 2019, Princeton Area Community Foundation contributed $9,600 to the left-of-center Voter Registration Project. 20

Princeton Area Community Foundation receives its funding from individual contributions, grants, and investment income. In 2021, the organization reported revenue of $20,796,965 and expenses of $21,046,044. In 2020, the organization reported revenue of $22,912,542 and expenses of $21,006,696. 21
