Chicago Abortion Fund provides support to women seeking abortions, especially those from states with restrictive abortion laws. 1 2 It is affiliated with and promoted by the National Network of Abortion Funds. 3

Background and Activities

Chicago Abortion Fund was established in 1986. 4 In 1990, it was described by the Chicago Tribune as “one of about 50 groups across the country that give or lend women money for abortions.” 5 It is affiliated with and promoted by the National Network of Abortion Funds. 6

Chicago Abortion Fund promotes abortion access and subsidizes abortions for poor women. 7 It also collects “testimonials” from women to whom it has provided abortion funding. 8 The organization is well connected to Democratic politicians, including Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D), 9 and major left-leaning foundations. 10 The organization uses gender-neutral language when discussing abortion, eschewing references to “women.” 11

In 2020, the organization reported spending $386,372 to assist 2,000 recipients to have abortions. 12 In 2021, the organization reported spending $578,046 to assist 2,000 recipients to have abortions. 13

Funding

Chicago Abortion Fund receives funding from many influential left-leaning foundations, including the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation 14 and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 15 The Irving Harris Foundation provided more than $75,000 in financial support in 2021. 16 The fund has also received financial support from the Arabella Advisors-managed Hopewell Fund. 17

The fund has also received significant grants from the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation, the Chicago-based Crossroads Fund, the Ford Foundation, and the Lefkofsky Family Foundation. 18

The fund saw a dramatic spike in revenue after the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturning Roe v. Wade compared to previous years. 19
