Field Strategies is a political advocacy group that works with labor groups, left-of-center advocacy organizations and campaigns and Democratic parties at the federal and state levels to help win elections through voter registration and outreach. 1 2 It has worked to increase voter turnout in politically competitive states and increase minority turnout in select states. 3

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Field Strategies made its reputation by campaigning for Barack Obama in 2008. 4 Field Strategies has partnered with left-of-center organizations including the National Education Association, United Auto Workers, America Votes and Planned Parenthood. 5

Field Strategies was involved in a voter registration drive in Georgia in 2014 that led to an investigation by the state board of elections. 6 The investigation turned up numerous questionable or invalid registration applications. 7

New Georgia Project

Georgia Democratic politician Stacey Abrams created the nonprofit Third Sector Development, which started a voter registration drive called the New Georgia Project in 2014. 8 Third Sector Development hired Field Strategies in 2014 and Field Strategies hired about 800 canvassers for the New Georgia Project, which made 619,000 interactions with potential Georgia voters that year. 9 The New Georgia Project submitted thousands of voter-registration applications to county election offices. 10

The New Georgia Project’s work was investigated by the Georgia Board of Elections. 11 Muscogee County Elections Director Nancy Boren said many applications submitted by the New Georgia Project were illegible, submitted multiple times, or contained suspicious information. 12 Boren gave an example where the name James Brown was on the name on the application but it was signed by Mary Smith. 13 A state investigation alleged that 53 registration applications out of 208 reviewed from 16 counties were fraudulent. 14

In 2014, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp said that one voter registration form simply had the name “R”, another just had the name “Edward,” and another had the name “Johnny B. Cool” who lived in “YoTown.” 15

2022 Georgia Senate Run-Off Election

Field Strategies stated it worked with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and knocked on 467,833 doors and contacted 111,707 voters in DeKalb and Fulton counties in Georgia 16 to help U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) defeat Republican Herschel Walker in the 2022 election. 17

2020 Elections

Philadelphia Presidential Turnout

Field Strategies said that 28 days before the 2020 general election, it knocked on 336,787 doors in Philadelphia to help voters understand the new law that allowed them to vote by mail. 18 Field Strategies said that voter turnover in Philadelphia was at record levels in the election. 19

Deliver My Vote

Deliver My Vote is a 501(c)(4) left-of-center nonprofit that promotes voting from home. Brian Dunn serves on the board of Deliver My Vote and is also the founder of Field Strategies. 20

Field Strategies teamed up with Deliver My Vote in 2020 to increase turnout among infrequent voters in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Michigan. 21

Take Back Control

Field Strategies started the Take Back Control program in April 2020 in an effort to win the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin for Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. Take Back Control targeted 214 counties in those three states that then-President Donald Trump had won in the 2016 presidential election. 22 The goal of Take Back Control was to get targeted voters to turn out to vote. 23 Biden won all three states in the November 2020 presidential election. 24

Leadership

Brian Dunn is a founder and partner at Field Strategies. 25 The New York Times described Dunn as “an Obama campaign alumnus” in 2020. 26

Dunn worked for more than five years at the National Education Association teachers’ union, where he served as the manager of campaigns and elections and a senior campaign specialist. 27 He was the deputy director of Get Out the Vote for the Ohio Democratic Party and Obama for America. 28

Matt Schneider is a founder of Field Strategies. 29 The New Jersey Globe described Schneider as “a veteran Democratic operative” who worked for the New Jersey Democratic State Committee. 30

Ryan Garner co-manages the West Coast operations for Field Strategies and has been a vice president since 2010. 31 Garner’s LinkedIn account listed him as the community outreach coordinator for former Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson (D) from May 2009 to October 2010. 32 The Sacramento Bee listed Garner as a paid intern on Johnson’s staff in August 2009. 33
