Reproductive Equity Now Foundation (REN) is a Boston-based abortion advocacy organization that promotes expansive abortion access throughout New England. The group frequently targets crisis pregnancy centers, characterizing them as “deceptive” and “dangerous.” 1

REN harshly criticizes President Donald Trump, calling his administration an “existential threat” to abortion access and claiming that his supporters seek a national abortion ban. 2

In addition to its 501(c)(3) foundation, REN operates a 501(c)(4) advocacy arm, Reproductive Equity Now Inc., which engages in lobbying and political activity. The organization has drawn attention for operating an “Abortion Legal Hotline” that facilitates the distribution of abortion pills, including to residents of states where abortion is restricted or banned. 3

Leadership

As of 2025, Reproductive Equity Now Foundation was led by Rebecca Hart Holder, who had been active in abortion advocacy for more than a decade at that point. Holder previously worked with the Reproductive Health Access Project and Provide Inc. and had been a founding advisory board member of the State Abortion Access Network and a board member of Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires. She holds a law degree from Berkeley School of Law. 4

REN’s 2025 board included treasurer Gary Daffin, chair Lisa Reilly, vice chair Andrea Richmond, clerk Bria Gadsden, and directors Trina Moore, Laurent Delli-Bovi, Lisa Malley, Karen Charles, Amy Rosenthal, Chloe Zera, and Sanam Feldman. Its managing director was Jane Piercy, who reported $108,983 in compensation in 2023, while Justine Hand was director of development. 5

Activities and Advocacy

Reproductive Equity Now frames its mission as promoting “reproductive equity,” a term it uses to justify expansive abortion access and related liberal policies. In 2024, REN announced an expansion into Connecticut and New Hampshire, aiming to establish a regional “block for abortion access.” 6

The organization maintains an online New England Abortion Care Guide, which lists abortion providers and warns users against pro-life pregnancy resource centers, labeling them “anti-abortion centers” and alleging deceptive practices. 1

REN’s campaigns have drawn legal challenges. In 2024, it partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on a $1 million taxpayer-funded campaign targeting crisis pregnancy centers. This effort led to a federal lawsuit from Your Options Medical, a Christian pregnancy resource center, which claimed REN and state officials violated its First and Fourteenth Amendment rights by singling out centers for their religious and political speech. The lawsuit also alleged the campaign contributed to a hostile climate against pro-life organizations, citing incidents of vandalism and selective law enforcement. REN has denied wrongdoing, calling the suit an attempt to silence its advocacy. 7  2

The organization also operates the Abortion Legal Hotline, which provides legal advice to abortion providers and patients and facilitates the shipment of abortion pills across state lines, including to states where abortion is restricted or banned. Following the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, REN lobbied Massachusetts lawmakers to enact legal protections for in-state abortion providers serving out-of-state patients, enabling access to abortion beyond state borders. 3

Beyond abortion, REN expands its advocacy to liberal causes such as childcare, voting access, and alleged systemic disparities in maternal health outcomes for Black and Hispanic women. The organization portrays the U.S. Supreme Court and Republican lawmakers as threats to reproductive freedom, while urging New England states to set a regional precedent for national reproductive policy. 8

Polling and Public Messaging

In March 2025, EMC Research conducted a voter survey on behalf of REN Foundation claiming Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly support abortion access, including removing restrictions on abortions after 24 weeks. The survey reported that only five percent of voters believed abortion should be illegal under all circumstances. 9

Affiliations and Partners

REN collaborates with national and regional pro-abortion organizations and government offices, including the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, the ACLU of Massachusetts, and the Attorney General of Massachusetts and Connecticut. The group has also partnered with prominent left-of-center law firms to support its Abortion Legal Hotline, including Foley Hoag, Goodwin Procter, Mintz Levin, Goulston & Storrs, and Ropes & Gray. 3

Financials

Reproductive Equity Now reported $1.7 million in revenue in 2023, with $1.56 million coming from grants and other public support. Its expenses totaled $1.55 million and assets stood at nearly $1.8 million. 10 Major donors to the organization in 2023 included the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, which contributed $150,000; the Heather and Robert Keane Family Foundation, which donated $100,000; and Fidelity Investments Charitable Gift Fund, which gave $182,225. 11  12  13 The organization also pays outside consultants such as Gintis Consulting, which was paid more than $41,000 for fundraising services in 2023. Its fundraising events include annual galas, which in 2023 brought in more than $100,000 for the 501(c)(3) foundation and more than $200,000 for the 501(c)(4) affiliate. 14  15

In addition to fundraising and grant revenue, in 2023 REN reported significant lobbying expenditures. That year, the group spent $60,609 on direct lobbying, which refers to attempts to influence legislators or government officials on specific bills or policies. It also reported $31,968 in grassroots lobbying, which seeks to sway public opinion and mobilize citizens to pressure lawmakers indirectly. 16
