Unrig Our Economy is a Sixteen Thirty Fund-backed left-of-center activist organization that opposes the interests of American businesses and supports higher taxes and greater government control of health care. Unrig Our Economy was formed in 2022 through the merger of Tax March (also known as Tax the Rich) and Health Care Voter. It runs campaigns attacking Republicans for allegedly supporting business interests at the expense of working people. 1 2

History

Unrig Our Economy is an organization that resulted from the merger of Tax March (also known as Tax the Rich) and Health Care Voter. Tax March is a left-of-center project of the Sixteen Thirty Fund that opposed the Trump administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and campaigns for tax increases. Sixteen Thirty Fund is managed by Arabella Advisors, a philanthropic consulting companies that guides the strategy, advocacy, impact investing, and management for high-dollar left-leaning nonprofits and individuals. Health Care Voter is a left-of-center healthcare advocacy organization created in 2017 to oppose the proposed repeal of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. 3 4

Tax March and Health Care Voter formally merged into Unrig Our Economy on March 30, 2022. The virtual launch event featured U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL). Through the merger of Tax March and Health Care Voter, Unrig Our Economy claims to bring together over 100 coalition partner groups and one million activists to lobby through paid media campaigns and grassroots engagement in favor of higher taxes and greater government control over the economy. 5 6 7

Advocacy

Unrig Our Economy argues that businesses, wealthy individuals, and politicians have “rigged the economy in their favor” while taking away power from working people. The organizations believe these problems are caused by Republican members of Congress who give unfair advantages to businesses allowing them to increase prices on consumers and dodge taxes, and that these issues cause problems that are specifically “worse for working people of color.” In response to this alleged problem, Unrig Our Economy conducts campaigns to change policies in ways it believes favors working Americans. 8 9

As of July 2024, Unrig the Economy has five campaigns: Corporate Price Gouging, Price of Greed, Tax the Rich, Health Care Voter, and People Greater. 10

Through the Corporate Price Gouging campaign, Unrig Our Economy argues that Republicans are helping businesses like Chevron, Exxon, General Mills, and others to raise food, gasoline, and other prices. 11

The Cost of Greed campaign is a newsletter produced by Unrig the Economy that argues that the “real story of inflation” is that people are being gouged by business with higher prices while said businesses also dodge taxes and exploit employees. 12

Through the Tax the Rich campaign, Unrig Our Economy argues for an “equitable” tax code that raises taxes. 13

Through the Healthcare Voter campaign, Unrig Our Economy urges activists to lobby politicians on healthcare policy. 14

Through the PeopleGreater campaign, Unrig Our Economy argues that the COVID-19 pandemic reinforced “record income inequality to record voter suppression laws and helps activists get integrated with left-of-center political movements.” 15
