March On Foundation, also known as March On Maryland, is a fiscal sponsorship organization associated with March On, a group that split off from the Women’s March movement, that coordinates marches and funds projects that advocate on policies towards racial justice, climate change, and LGBT rights. 1

Background

March On Foundation was formed in 2019 to expand March On’s goals nationally. March On originally began in 2017 as a partner of the Women’s March, but later split off to form an organization that, among other activities, offers fiscal sponsorships to left-wing organizing groups through its 501(c)(3) arm. 2    

Activities

The March On Foundation partners with other groups to organize marches and protest movements. This includes the Women’s Unity March, which took place four times between 2018 and 2019 in Annapolis, Maryland. The March on Foundation was also a partner organization for the 2022 Unity March, which was centered around racial politics and civic engagement in Washington, D.C. and led by Asian Americans Advancing Justice. 3 4

People

Esther Pang is the chief executive officer of the March On Foundation. Pang also worked as program manager at Future Coalition, a fiscally sponsored project of the March On Foundation, and on the board of Hollaback. 5

Emma Buchanan is a digital content creator for the March On Foundation. Buchanan previously interned for the Maryland Democratic Party. 6

The Foundation’s board includes board president M. Eve Hurwitz, who is the founder of MoveOverMen and has held positions at the Future Coalition and the Milky Way Foundation; Monica Lindsey; and Jay Mecholsky. 7 8

Fiscal Sponsorships

March On Foundation’s fiscally sponsored projects include Future Incubator, which funds youth-led projects in civic engagement, climate change, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education; 9 Future Coalition, a network of youth-led political advocacy organizations that promote left-of-center views on environmentalism; 10 Culture Lab, a civic engagement group working to further Black participation in environmentalism; 11 and GENup, a California-based student-led group that advocates for educational reform. 12 13

Funding

The March On Foundation has received funding from left-of-center groups including the Amalgamated Charitable Foundation, the Climate Emergency Fund, the Fidelity Investments Charitable Gift Fund, the Grove Action Fund, the Hopewell Fund, ImpactAssets Inc, the Movement Strategy Center, NEO Philanthropy, NextGen Climate Action, One Earth, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, the Schwab Charitable Fund, the Social Impact Fund, the Sustainable Markets Foundation, the Tides Center, the Tides Foundation, and the Windward Fund.  14

Between 2019 and 2022, the Tides Foundation gave $310,000 to the March on Foundation. 15 16 17 18
