The Knowledge House (TKH) is an education nonprofit based in the South Bronx which provides technology-focused training, fellowships, and internships to children and young adults from low-income communities. The organization seeks to prepare students with skills to obtain good-paying jobs in the tech sector, with upward mobility and opportunity. 1
TKH identifies with left-leaning perspectives on race and economic equality, describing itself as “anti-racist” and “anti-poverty” and affirming that it is a “diverse, equitable, and inclusive” organization. Co-founder and CEO Jeralyn Rodriguez, who is Black, founded TKH because in his words he “wanted to make sure that people who look like me, and people from my community, weren’t left out of the innovation economy.” 2
In 2022, TKH expanded its work to Newark, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. 3 At the end of 2023, Mackenzie Scott (ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos) made a $5 million dollar donation to TKH, through her foundation Yield Giving. 4 5 Shortly after the announcement, CEO Jeralyn Rodriguez began hiring for several director-level and executive-level positions in locations around the country. 6
Programs
The Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship (KCF) is a yearlong program for high school students. The program begins with paid, virtual summer training in coding, graphic design, and professional development skills. The Knowledge House (TKH) stays in touch with students to provide access internships or to enroll in college STEM programs. Enrollment priority is given to non-white, foreign-born, or first-generation Americans. 7
KCF is named after Karim Kharbouch (stage name French Montana), a Moroccan-American rapper who emigrated from Morocco to New York City at the age of 13. Kharbouch is also a prominent supporter of Global Citizen, a left-of-center environmentalist, anti-poverty, and critical race theory-aligned organization. 8
The Innovation Fellowship is a part time evening program for adults to learn web development and other skills to obtain employment in the tech sector. Innovation Fellows can earn certifications in cloud computing, user experience design (UX), cybersecurity, and more with financial and instructional support from TKH. 9
