The Labor Campaign for Single Payer, also known as Labor for Single Payer Healthcare, is a coalition of labor unions and advocacy groups supporting a taxpayer-funded socialized health care system in the United States. The group was formed in 2009 by Mark Dudzic, a longtime labor activist and former national organizer of the Labor Party. The group supports Medicare-for-All legislation and has participated as a partner organization in the 2025 “No Kings” protests against the second administration of President Donald Trump. Among the members of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer are the California School Employees Association (CSEA), the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), and the International Association of Machinists (IAM). 1 2 3 4

Background and Activity

The Labor Campaign for Single Payer (LCSP), incorporated as Labor for Single Payer Healthcare, was formed by labor activist Mark Dudzic in January 2009 prior to the inauguration of President Barack Obama, to organize labor unions to support a single-payer, Medicare-for-All health care system. The campaign lobbied for the passage of “a resolution endorsing a single-payer ‘social insurance model’ long-term solution to the healthcare crisis at the AFL-CIO‘s 2009 Convention” and “works to promote national single-payer legislation and labor-supported state universal healthcare initiatives.” 3

In 2025, the campaign was identified as one of hundreds of advocacy groups, Democratic Party committees, labor unions, and other organizations supporting and facilitating national “No Kings” protests against the second administration of President Donald Trump. 4 5

Leadership

Mark Dudzic is a long-time union organizer and left-of-center political activist who is the national coordinator and president of the Labor Campaign for Single Payer. Dudzic previously worked as the national organizer for the now-defunct Labor Party, a short-lived political initiative in the late 1990s and early 2000s that sought to establish a worker-focused alternative to the Democratic Party. A former oil refinery worker and president of Rahway, New Jersey’s Local 149 of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers (now part of the United Steelworkers), Dudzic has remained active in labor politics and regularly contributes to left-of-center outlets such as Common Dreams, advocating for Medicare-for-All and broader pro-union policies. He is affiliated with CalTcha, a collective of self-described cultural organizers. 3
