Humanity United Action (HUA) is a political advocacy group founded by billionaire eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. It is the sister group of Humanity United. As with other Omidyar-founded organizations, nearly all of HUA’s revenue comes from grants directly from Omidyar and his wife. Though Omidyar’s advocacy efforts primarily support left-of-center causes, HUA’s advocacy is mostly focused on combatting global forced labor. 1
Background
Humanity United was founded in 2001 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam as a part of their philanthropic, “social welfare,” and lobbying network. It became its own independent entity in 2008, and was established as a private foundation in 2016, at which time it ceased its lobbying and legal advocacy activities. 2 3 That same year, the legislative advocacy branch of the organization was spun off as its own independent social welfare group called Humanity United Action. 4
Though Omidyar’s advocacy efforts primarily support left-of-center causes, HUA’s advocacy is mostly focused on combatting global forced labor. 1
Leadership
Pam and Pierre Omidyar are the co-founders of Humanity United Action and Humanity United. They are also the force behind the Omidyar Nexus, a group of nonprofit and for-profit organizations and holding companies that fund numerous left-of-center initiatives. Pierre Omidyar is the founder of online commerce giant eBay. Pam Omidyar is also the board chair of HUA and Humanity United. 5 6
As of 2025, Srik Gopal was the president and CEO of Humanity United Action and Humanity United and had been since January 2020. He also sits on the board of the Council on Foundations, a membership association of more than 850 grantmaking foundations and corporations. From June 2016 to January 2020, Gopal worked at the Democracy Fund, another organization founded by Pierre Omidyar. Earlier, Gopal worked at the New Teacher Center, a teacher training group, and the Ball Foundation. 7 8
In 2020, Kehinde Togun joined Humanity United as senior director of policy and government relations and later became the organization’s managing director of public engagement and partnerships. According to his biography on Humanity United’s website, Togun is responsible for “pursuing legal and policy change through Humanity United Action.” Togun as of 2025 was also a senior non-resident fellow at the Center for International Policy, a non-resident fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development, and a security fellow at the Truman National Security Project. Earlier in his career, Togun was a team member at the Council on Foreign Relations and worked at the National Democratic Institute. 9 10

Also in 2024, HUA co-signed a letter with 17 other organizations that was sent to 13 companies to advocate taking responsibility for forced labor used by fishing suppliers. 15
In 2022, HUA financially supported “notable bipartisan legislation” including the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act and the End Human Trafficking in Government Contracts Act. HUA also funded the Tariff Act Advisory Group coalition. 16
Also in 2022, HUA and the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (a project of the Tides Network) made a comment submission to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support a National Marine Fisheries Service proposal to amend the definition of illegal fishing to include fishing done outside of U.S. borders with forced labor. 17
