The Dudley Foundation is a left-of-center grantmaking organization founded by the late Gerric “Rick” Dudley, the son Franklin Roosevelt administration official and longtime left-of-center activist Tilford Dudley. 1 2 3 4 It largely funds environmental activist organizations, organizations that promote population control, and various other left-wing groups. 5 6
Supported Organizations
Environmental Organizations
The Dudley Foundation supports several environmentalist activist organizations that promote dramatic changes to human society. These organizations include the Global Greengrants Fund ($32,500 in 2022), Protect our Winters ($16,500 in 2022), Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility ($8,000 in 2022), the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund ($14,000 in 2022), and Green America ($14,500 in 2022). 7
Population Control Organizations
The Dudley Foundation has supported a variety of left-of-center organizations that advocate for population control due to predictions of catastrophic environmental disaster. 8
Population Balance is a left-of-center activist organization that promotes a decrease of the human population, the replacement of human primacy with “ecocentrism,” and “social justice” to correct perceived injustices that it attributes to the drive for economic growth. To that end, its slogan is “shrink towards abundance.” 9 In 2022 it received $9,500 from the Dudley Foundation. 10
Population Connection, formerly known as Zero Population Growth, is another left-of-center activist organization that promotes a decrease in the human population. The organization promotes abortion access, contraception, and environmental controls in the United States and around the world. The foundation provided a grant of $11,500 in 2022. 11
In 2022, the foundation also provided $8,500 to Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, a Washington state-based Planned Parenthood affiliate that provides abortion and birth control in the Bellingham area. 12
Left-of-Center Organizations
In addition to donations to environmental- and population-control-focused groups, the Dudley Foundation supports other left-leaning groups, including Corporate Accountability International ($15,500 in 2022), OxFam America ($11,000 in 2022), The Union of Concerned Scientists ($12,500 in 2022), FairVote ($20,500 in 2022), and the Move to Amend Education Fund ($7,500 in 2022). 13
Leadership
Gerric “Rick” Dudley was the founder and former president of the Dudley Foundation. He was a left-wing activist who supported numerous causes ranging from environmental issues, population control, anti-capitalism, and pro-Palestinian activism. His father, Tilford E. Dudley, was an official in the Franklin Roosevelt administration and later went on to become a prominent union organizer and official and the chairman of the Washington, D.C. Democratic Central Committee. His mother, Martha Ward Dudley, was also a left-wing activist. 14 15 16 17
