It was founded in 1990 and supports ten regional chapters around country in cities such as Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. 1

AAPIP received a grant of $10,000 from the aerospace manufacturing company Boeing as a part of a $1.1 million philanthropic campaign by the company focused on AAPI organizations. 6 AAPIP also received multiple grants from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in 2016, 2019, 2020, and 2021. 7

People

Patricia Eng is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy. She began working for AAPIP after serving as Chief Service Officer at the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York. She graduated from Hunter College School of Social Work and Princeton University. 8

Suk Rhee, vice president of programs at Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy, 9 was accused by colleagues of creating a toxic work environment at her previous position as director of the Office of Community and Civic Life in Portland, Oregon. 10 A review released in May 2021 confirmed reports of employee complaints going back years, including accusations of a social and emotional harm, punitive management practices, dysfunctional work culture, a lack of resources, and a disconnect between the goals and practices of the bureau. Rhee departed her position and received a severance package that included a payment for accrued vacation time and six months of payments to continue medical benefits. By signing the agreement, Rhee agreed to not apply for a new job with the city for at least three years and gave up any right to sue the city. 11
