Alianza Nacional de Campesinas (National Farmworker Women’s Alliance 1) is a left-of-center national farmworker women’s advocacy organization in the United States. 2 Founded in 2011, 3 Alianza supports a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants currently in the United States 4 5 and the expansion of the federal Child Tax Credit to include illegal immigrants. 6

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas advocates for the elimination of the “Remain in Mexico” policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, which requires asylum applicants to wait in Mexico while their application is processed. The group also supports the elimination of the “Title 42” policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, which prevents asylum seekers and other foreign nationals from entering the United States from Mexico due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 7

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas received two grants of $500,000 from Peter Buffett’s left-of-center NoVo Foundation 8 in 2020. In 2018, the organization received grants of $1.5 million from the NoVo Foundation 9 and $100,000 from the left-of-center and labor-union-aligned National Domestic Workers Alliance. 10

History and Leadership

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas (National Alliance of Farmworker Women) was formed in 2011, 11 making it the first national farmworker women’s organization in the United States. 12

Monica Ramirez is a co-founder of the Alianza Nacional de Campesinas. She is also the founder of the left-of-center Justice for Migrant Women and the Latinx House. 13 Former United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union activist 14 15 Mily Trevino-Sauceda is Alianza Nacional de Campesinas’s executive director. 16 17

Headquartered in Oxnard, California, 18 Alianza is comprised of 15 member organizations based across 10 states and Washington, D.C., 19 and was granted nonprofit status in 2015. 20

Activities and Funding

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas is the first left-of-center national farmworker women’s advocacy organization in the United States. 21

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas supports a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants currently in the United States 22 23 and the expansion of the federal Child Tax Credit to include illegal immigrants. 24 The group advocates for the elimination of the “Remain in Mexico” policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, which requires asylum applicants to wait in Mexico while their application is processed. Members of Alianza are comprised of current or former farmworker women and also represent organizations including Campesinos Sin Fronteras, Centro de los Derechos del Migrante, Colonias Development Council, Farmworker Association of Florida, La Mujer Obrera, Organizacion en California de Líderes Campesinas, Pineros y Campesinos Unidos of Oregon (PCUN), the Rural Coalition, and others. 26

Alianza de Campesina also sends delegations of farmworkers to Washington, D.C., for activism. The left-of-center Earthjustice, Farmworker Justice, Georgetown University, the Rural Coalition, and representatives from the Obama administration‘s U.S. Department of Agriculture were “instrumental in planning and providing support” to these trips. 27

In addition, Alianza is a member of the 16-member council of Mosaic, a left-of-center grantmaking initiative that issued $3 million of grants in 2021. 28

Funding

In 2020, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas reported revenue of $558,129 and expenses of $1,019,458. 29 In 2019, the organization reported revenue of $79,962 and expenses of $790,423. 30

In 2020, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas received two grants of $500,000 from the left-of-center NoVo Foundation, the grantmaking organization of Warren Buffett’s son Peter and his family. 31

In 2019, the organization received $50,000 from the NoVo Foundation via the left-of-center Tides Foundation to support its One Billion Rising program. 32 33

In 2018, Alianza received $1.5 million from the NoVo Foundation; 34 $100,000 from the left-of-center and labor-union-aligned National Domestic Workers Alliance; 35 $50,000 from the left-of-center National Women’s Law Center; 36 $20,000 from the Tides Foundation; 37 and $20,000 from the Groundswell Fund. 38
