Michigan Donor Alliance is a collection of individual and organizational donors that provide campaign and administrative services to left-of-center political organizations and causes. 1

Michigan Donor Alliance members include individuals, organizations, foundations, corporations, and labor unions. The organization supports voter engagement, political research, political innovation, and identifying candidate and leadership pipeline gaps. 2 The organization also helps its members optimize donations to both tax-deductible and non-tax-deductible organizations. 3

In 2022, Michigan Donor Alliance received $100,000 from the left-of-center Katz Amsterdam Foundation. 4 In 2020, Michigan Donor Alliance received $745,000 from the left-of-center Rural Democracy Initiative’s Rural Victory Fund. 5

History and Leadership

Michigan Donor Alliance was formed in Madison Heights, Michigan in 2021. 6

Amy Chapman is the director of the Michigan Donor Alliance. 7 8 She is a political organizer for Democratic Party and left-of-center political causes. 9 Chapman also operates her own consultancy firm and is the executive director of the left-leaning Michigan Civic Action Fund. 10 Prior to joining Michigan Donor Alliance, she worked in various roles for Obama for America (OFA), the 2008 Obama presidential campaign, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the Democratic National Committee, AFL-CIO labor union, and the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton (D) and Michael Dukakis (D). 11

Martha Gonzalez-Cortes is the director of foundation relations for the Michigan Donor Alliance. Prior to joining the Michigan Donor Alliance, she was vice president of the left-of-center Kalamazoo Community Foundation. In that role, she led the foundation’s critical race theory-inspired truth, racial healing, and transformation initiative. 12

Former Michigan State Rep. Jon Hoadley (D) was named Michigan Donor Alliance’s membership engagement director in 2022. 13

Activities and Funding

Michigan Donor Alliance is a collection of individual and organizational donors who provide campaign and administrative services to left-of-center political organizations. 14 The group also works to build a consensus and strategically address long-term priorities and goals for the state of Michigan. 15

Michigan Donor Alliance creates a shared funding plan to support left-of-center electoral victories by financially supporting projects targeting sustained voter engagement, shared infrastructure, political research and innovation, and address candidate and leadership pipeline gaps. Michigan Donor Alliance includes individuals, organizations, foundations, corporations, and state- and national-level labor unions. 16

Michigan Donor Alliance also works with its members to optimize tax-deductible and non-deductible 501(c)(4) donations and makes recommendations to its members for impactful political contributions. The organization has identified a $3.2 million gap in funding for Michigan campaigns that includes urban canvassing efforts and paid media. 17

In 2022, Michigan Donor Alliance funded a workshop on “inclusive campaigns” with the left-of-center Ford Foundation and the left-leaning Movement Voter Project for Detroit Disability Power. 18

Michigan Donor Alliance also hosts webinars and training sessions on political and nonprofit issues including campaign finance regulations and legal training for its members. 19
