Anne Wojcicki is co-founder and CEO of 23andMe. She was previously married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, and while they were married they co-led the Brin Wojcicki Foundation. 1

Anne Wojcicki is the president and board chair of the Anne Wojcicki Foundation. 2 She was listed by the left-leaning philanthropic commentary and news website Inside Philanthropy as among the “50 Most Powerful Women in Philanthropy” and has been listed by Forbes magazine as one of “the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” 3 4

Family

Anne Wojcicki is the sister of Susan Wojcicki, who has worked for Google for over 20 years, nine of which were as CEO of YouTube, and is the treasurer and secretary for the Anne Wojcicki Foundation. 5 Her other sister is Janet Wojcicki, doctor and professor at the University of California San Francisco. Anne Wojcicki’s mother, Esther Wojcicki, is known as a parenting expert. 6

Anne Wojcicki was married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin from 2008 to 2015 and shares two children with him. Their divorce settled for an undisclosed amount of money, and it is reported that a prenuptial agreement was in place. 7

23andMe

Anne Wojcicki co-founded the genetic testing company 23andMe in 2006 and has worked as the CEO since. 23andMe is an FDA-approved digital health company that allows customers to send in DNA samples through kits and from which the company derives information regarding their health based on their genetics. 8 As of March 2023, it had a $1.06 billion market cap, and as of November 2023 it had over 14 million customers. 9 10

23andMe has faced some controversy regarding its data collection, privacy, and security. 11 In October 2023, 23andMe published a press release reveling that there had been a data breach of customer data through “data stuffing,” a process where hackers used stolen login information from other sources to log into 23andMe customer accounts and steal data. At which time, the genetic data of the affected customers were accessible and potentially stolen by hackers. 12 It was also questioned by Connecticut Attorney General William Tong (D) as to whether or not a data breach was targeted towards Ashkenazi Jewish and Chinese genetic data. 13

Philanthropy

While married, Anne Wojcicki co-led the Brin Wojcicki Foundation alongside her then-husband Sergey Brin. 14 15

Anne Wojcicki is the president and board chair of her private foundation, the Anne Wojcicki Foundation. 16 In 2022, the Anne Wojcicki Foundation reported $5.1 million in revenue, $23.6 million in grants paid, and $454.4 million in assets. 17

In 2022, the Anne Wojcicki Foundation made grants to several major left-of-center philanthropic organizations, including $5 million to New Venture Fund for Project Daybreak, $100,000 to Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, $750,000 to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and $1 million to the Barack Obama Foundation. 18

Political Activities

Anne Wojcicki contributes to Democratic Party political campaigns. Since 2010, her top contributions include a $600,000 to the Biden Victory Fund campaign in 2020, $275,000 to the Democratic National Committee in 2021, and $213,000 to the Democratic National Committee in 2022. Other notable recipients include Gavin Newsom (D-CA), former Democratic party presidential nominee Hilary Clinton, and the Ossoff-Warnock Victory Fund. 19
