The International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA) is an international network of more than 200 socialist, communist, left wing, and labor union-oriented political organizations. 1 IPA supports anti-imperialist, anti-colonial, anti-Zionist, and pro-feminist ideologies. 2 3
IPA was founded with the mission of building a global mass movement against imperialism and capitalism. 4 In 2024, IPA celebrated the 100th anniversary of the death of Soviet dictator “comrade” Vladimir Lenin, 5 supported the re-election of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, 6 and celebrated the publication of the Communist Manifesto. 7
History and Leadership
In 2015, the Brazilian socialist group 8 Landless Rural Workers Movement (in Portuguese, Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra or MST) convened two international conferences focused on what MST considered the Dilemmas of Humanity in Brazil. The International Peoples’ Assembly (IPA) was created later in 2015 after the completion of the Dilemmas of Humanity conference. 9
The organization was founded with the mission of building a global mass movement against imperialism and capitalism. 4
Activities
As of August 2024, International Peoples’ Assembly’s membership includes more than 200 left wing parties, trade unions, organizations, and social movements from around the world. Through IPA, member organizations are engaged in mobilization, political training, and social research to support their political ideologies. 9
IPA’s partner organizations include ALBA Movements, Code Pink, the Communist Party of Nepal, the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba, the Palestinian People’s Party, the Communist Party of Spain, the far-left Popular Education Project, Power to the People, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the Socialist Movement of Ghana, and other socialist, left-wing, and labor union-oriented political organizations. 1
IPA’s coordinating committee represents political organizations and far-left movements at a regional level, with representation from Sub-Saharan Africa, North America, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. 1
In 2023, IPA organized the international Dilemmas of Humanity conference. 9 The organization also runs the Internationalist Collective for Political Education, a far-left newsletter, 1 and is a research partner of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. 10
Ideology
The International Peoples’ Assembly supports anti-imperialist, anti-colonial, anti-Zionist, and pro-feminist ideologies. 2 The organization does not aim to build an organization or lead the struggle against capitalism and imperialism. It views anti-capitalism as a new form or organizing society 3 and seeks to dismantle capitalism and support ideological efforts to “overthrow” what it considers “class-based exploitation.” 11
IPA’s political platform includes the nationalization of the global financial system, and creating a political system based on the critical race theory-influenced values of social equality, justice, and solidarity. 2
IPA has said that capitalist forces use Zionism to maintain their domination in the Maghreb and Arab regions. It supports self-determination without the intervention of the United States, European Union, or North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which it considers a “multilateral instrument of war.” 2
IPA promotes what it calls “anti-capitalist feminism,” opposes the traditional family structure, supports the fight against what it considers the patriarchy, and supports far left anti-racist policies. 2 IPA also demands agrarian reforms that include organized agricultural industries; “spatial justice,” or guarantees of land and work to all who want to live in the countryside; and a right to work, housing, land, food, and recreation. 2
Political Activism
The International Peoples’ Assembly celebrates Red Books Day, which commemorates the day on which Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels first published the Communist Manifesto. 7
In 2024, IPA celebrated the 100th anniversary of the death of Soviet dictator “comrade” Vladimir Lenin 5 and supported the re-election of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. 6 On Twitter, IPA shared posts from the Party for Socialism and Liberation that opposed U.S. criticism of Maduro during ongoing protests of the contested 2024 Venezuelan presidential election. 12
In a statement released with the left wing Progressive International, IPA demanded an end to what it calls the “U.S.-Israeli Genocide of the Palestinian people” in Gaza and to cut all ties with Zionism. 13 IPA’s newsletter has called for a trial of U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what it calls the “genocide of the Palestinian people.” It suggested the trial could be sponsored by the IPA in North America with the radical-left ANSWER Coalition, socialist People’s Forum, Palestinian Youth Movement, and others. 14
