Indivisible Minnesota is a state-level coalition made up of 40 Indivisible Project groups that are organized by congressional district and metro area. It follows the policies of Indivisible, which includes fighting against the Republican Party and supporting “progressive policies at the city, state, and national level.” 1
Background
Indivisible Minnesota is a group of organizations throughout Minnesota that are aligned to the Indivisible Project headquartered in Washington, D.C. Indivisible started in 2016 in response to the election of President Donald Trump. It began as a Google Drive document called the “Indivisible Guide,” written by “a group of progressive congressional staffers” that provided guidance on organizing “to pressure your elected officials to resist Trump’s agenda.” 2 It continues to push the Biden administration and Democrats to fight the Republican Party by portraying them as “enemies of abortion, democracy, and freedom.” 3
Local Indivisible groups formed throughout the country and a national organization developed to provide strategic leadership, coordination across local groups, and support. The national organization also lobbies congress on behalf of the Indivisible movement to “defeat the rightwing takeover of American government.” 4 It has developed a Group Support Hub online that provides resources for the Indivisible groups. 5
There are 40 Indivisible groups in Minnesota organized by congressional district and metro area. Most of these groups have a Facebook page to announce events and to publish posts that support left-of-center issues and reject the Republican platform. 6
One of the more active groups is Indivisible Twin Cities, which is a volunteer-led group from the Minneapolis/St. Paul areas focused on “increasing civic engagement and education on progressive policies at the city, state, and national level.” Upcoming events as of July 2024 include a group door knocking event to support the election of a full Democratic ticket in 2024 and a Zoom meeting to discuss the election of Vice President Kamala Harris and ensuring “45 isn’t re-elected.” 7 Its legislative priorities include legislation to expand the Supreme Court and the passage of the Minnesota Equal Rights Amendment to support transgender interests and abortion access. 8
Statewide Groups
Indivisible MN Legislative Action is a statewide Indivisible Project group that watches the Minnesota state legislature and develops Calls to Action to its members in an effort to “support and advance progressive legislation.” 9 10
The Minnesota Individual Alliance is a statewide Indivisible coalition that organizes events, continues to grow the Indivisible coalition, and provides updates across the individual Minnesota groups. 11
Partnerships
Indivisible Minnesota is partners with We Choose Us and several left-of-center organizations in Minnesota focused on “fighting to protect and expand multiracial democracy in Minnesota.” We Choose Us claims that power is in the hands of a “white, wealthy few.” 12 The We Choose Us list of partners includes Minnesota activist group ISAIAH; Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota; the New Justice Project which is focused on “building power for Black Minnesotans” with specific attention to Black immigrants, women, and ex-prisoners; 13 FairVote Minnesota; Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition – Minnesota; TakeAction Minnesota; Minnesota AFL-CIO; and League of Women Voters Minnesota. 14
In February 2024, Indivisible MN Legislative Action encouraged local groups to join with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense for a rally at the state capitol to support gun control legislation, as well as FairVote Minnesota to acknowledge the start of the 2024 legislative session. 15
Funding
The national headquarters reported 2022 revenues of $11,740,059 and expenses of $11,552,698. 16 Organizations that donated to it include the Wellness Advocacy Fund, Fund for a Better Future, Public Citizen Foundation, America Votes, Open Society Policy Center, Tides Advocacy, and Tides Foundation. 17
Local Indivisible groups are volunteer-led and rely on local donations, the Indivisible distributed fundraising program administered by ActBlue, and grants from the national organization. 18
