Impeach Trump. Again (ITA) is a campaign advocating for the U.S. Congress to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. The campaign was launched on President Trump’s second inauguration day. 1

ITA was launched by Free Speech for People (FSP), a left-of-center advocacy group that supports expanding campaign finance regulations, including constitutional amendments to limit campaign spending by private individuals and organizations. FSP launched a nearly identical campaign, Impeach Trump Now (ITN) on President Trump’s first inauguration day. 2

Background

On January 20, 2017, Impeach Trump Now was launched by Free Speech for People and RootsAction to advocate that the U.S. Congress to launch impeachment procedures against newly inaugurated President Donald Trump. ITN accused President Trump of profiting from his office, advocating illegal violence, conspiring with foreign powers, and undermining the freedom of the press, among other impeachable offenses. ITN collected signatures from 1.4 million Americans and passed seventeen local ordinances supporting the impeachment of President Trump. 3 2

Much of FSP’s activity since 2017 has been devoted to opposing Trump as president and then a presidential candidate. FSP established a petition calling for the California and New York state retirement systems to divest from Trump SoHo, a subsidiary of the Trump Organization. 4 In 2018, FSP released The Constitution Demands It: The Case For The Impeachment of Donald Trump, a book co-written by FSP president John Bonifaz. 5 In 2023, FSP filed a lawsuit on behalf of state voters against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D), LaBrant v. Benson, to disqualify former president Donald Trump’s name from appearing on the 2024 presidential ballot by claiming Trump had engaged in an insurrection and was disqualified by the insurrection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. 6

Impeach Trump. Again. was launched by FSP on January 20th, 2025 (Inauguration Day) in response to the second inauguration of President Trump. FSP claims that ITA is a “non-partisan campaign” organized to advocate for the U.S. Congress to immediately impeach President Trump based on his conduct during his second presidential campaign and actions upon taking office. 1

Justifications for Impeachment

According to Impeach Trump. Again, President Donald Trump has committed actions in violation of the U.S. Constitution that make him legally impeachable on the first day of his second administration. First, the organization alleges that President Trump has violated the Emoluments Clauses by personally profiting from his political office by refusing to divest himself from numerous companies that have received foreign investments and by renting space in Trump Tower to five foreign governments. 7

Second, ITA alleges that President Trump engaged in “unlawful, unconstitutional, and corrupt conduct during the 2024 presidential campaign.” ITA claims that President Trump violated campaign finance law by explicitly offering political favors to campaign donors, coordinating campaigning between his campaign and supportive super PACs, and soliciting donations on Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) through a lottery scheme that allegedly only paid out to public supporters of President Trump. ITA claims that President Trump used “racist, xenophobic rhetoric” regarding immigrants, particularly Haitians. ITA claims that President Trump spread “dangerous disinformation” and threatened his political opponents with physical violence, including murder. 7

Third, ITA alleges that President Trump abused his pardon power by pardoning all individuals arrested and charged for involvement during the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. President Trump has also ordered the U.S. Department of Justice to drop all charges against the fa-right Proud Boys and Oath Keepers groups. 7

Additionally, ITA claims that during the 2024 presidential election, President Trump promised to commit impeachable offenses once he became president. It alleges that President Trump promised to “unlawfully mobilize the U.S. military in U.S. cities”; “cruelly and unconstitutionally imprison and separate immigrant families”; “selectively prosecute or otherwise seek retribution against political rivals and journalists”; and “appoint billionaire campaign contributors such as Elon Musk–including in manners that evade congressional oversight–to key positions that will provide them decision-making authority from which they are positioned to personally profit at the expense and to the detriment of the American people and in possible violation of the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses.” 7

Criticism

Katy Grimes, the editor-in-chief of the California Globe, criticized Impeach Trump. Again for false claims of non-partisanship given its goals, funding sources, and the leadership of Free Speech for People. Grimes pointed out that FSP did not call for impeaching President Joe Biden despite “his family’s influence peddling scheme and dubious financial history with foreign countries.” 8
