The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice (Hive Fund) is an organization that connects larger funders to local organizations that directly impact communities and regions. 1

The Hive Fund opposes fossil fuels, natural gas, new highway construction, and building additional pipelines. The Hive Fund wants carbon emissions cut to half of 2021 levels by 2030. In addition to funding left-leaning environmental causes, the Hive Fund has given grant money to voter registration and voter education groups to promote the organization’s environmentalist agenda. 2

History

The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice was founded in 2019 to financially assist groups that are led by Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander women in the South. 3 The Hive Fund claims that almost 40 percent of U.S. climate pollution comes from Texas and the Southeast. 4 The Hive Fund was created to connect funders to local groups that work on left-leaning environmental issues. 5

Positions

The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice provides funding to groups in local communities that are against fossil fuels, natural gas, and any carbon emissions. 6 The Hive Fund seeks to strengthen multi-racial activist groups, promote equity in fighting global warming, fund voter registration efforts to build environmental coalitions, and fund comedians and artists to change cultural norms, policies, and civil systems. 7

Through funding, the Hive Fund is supporting grantees that are targeting specific oil, gas, and petrochemical facilities to stop construction or expansion. 8 The Hive Fund advocates ending the construction of new gas pipelines. 9 The Hive Fund seeks to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030 and to net-negative by mid-century. 10 Through local groups, the Hive Fund has fought against highway expansion in Houston, Texas; pipeline expansion in Virginia and North Carolina; and funded many voter education and voter registration efforts seeking to recruit future environmentalist voters. 11

Finances

The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice has given more than $57 million in grant money since 2020 with at least 85 percent of funding going to organizations located in the South. 12 The Hive Fund for Climate and Gender Justice is fiscally sponsored by the Windward Fund, a group funded by Arabella Advisors. 13 The Hive Fund granted $20 million in 2023 and is attempting to double the amount by 2025. 14
