Climate Imperative Foundation is a San Francisco-based environmentalist advocacy group focused on climate change. It is a charitable organization that survives off donations. Its major donors include the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which gave it a $20,000,000 grant in 2021.

As of 2023, the Foundation’s president was Hal Harvey, a longtime climate activist and philanthropist.

Background

Climate Imperative Foundation is based in San Francisco, California. 1 It is a climate change policy advocacy organization that provides funds to groups seeking to significantly reduce carbon emissions. 2 It was formed in 2020. 3

Activities

Climate Imperative Foundation’s self-proclaimed values include “ambition,” “service,” “discipline,” and the left-of-center concept of “equity.” The Foundation claims all its grantmaking is in service to these ends. 2 Its stated mission is to “cut global carbon emissions at speed and scale” by advocating for left-of-center energy policies and environmental regulations in “the world’s major emitting countries over the next decade.” 2

Climate Imperative Foundation makes the claim that its anti-traditional energy policies will “save money” and “create new jobs” because weather-dependent energy, it alleges, can easily replace fossil fuels at a lower cost. Beyond these utilitarian arguments, it also claims that scientists cite the 2020 decade as the last chance to save the planet and that it is therefore an “imperative we all face” to “secure a safe climate future” in the immediate near-term. 2
