Reproductive Freedom for All, formerly named NARAL Pro-Choice America until September 2023, is a membership-based, pro-abortion advocacy group that claims oppose all abortion-restriction policies. 1
Background
Reproductive Freedom for All is a pro-abortion advocacy group that was previously called the NARAL Pro-Choice America up to September 2023. In a September 2023 interview with the New York Times, NARAL president and CEO Mini Timmaraju claimed, “Pro-choice” does not resonate with the moderate, younger and male voters who have become more engaged since the Supreme Court ended the nationwide right to abortion last year.” 1 She further claimed that the previous name failed, “to reflect the work of Black and Hispanic women long on the front lines of the fight for abortion access. 1
As part of its rebranding, the new Reproductive Freedom for All advocates for framing the ability for of abortion access as “an American liberty,” claiming it was messaging used following the 2022 midterm elections. In addition, the new group’s focus includes advocating for, “eliminating the Senate filibuster, supporting voting rights and expanding the Supreme Court.” 1
According to its website, the group claims to have over 4 million members while hosting events and campaigns in support of policies including full access to the procedure, access to birth control and policies that would mandate employers provide paid parental leave. 2
Activities and Advocacy
Dobbs Supreme Court Ruling Response
In June 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade along with several related previous rulings. The ruling claimed that the U.S. Constitution does not mention, nor does it grant, a right to abortion. A summary of the conclusion claimed that the right to an abortion, is neither deeply rooted in the nation’s history nor an essential component of “ordered liberty.”” 3
Following the Dobbs decision, NARAL, rebranded Reproductive Freedom for All, claimed to change their advocacy towards branding abortion access as, “a fight for fundamental freedoms.” 1 In a 2023 New York Times story, the group’s president and CEO Mini Timmaraju claimed it is, “…not necessarily in the business anymore of just winning political opinion within elected officials and policymakers…[w]e are now in a much bigger fight for the heart and soul of the American people and those are folks who are brand-new to the abortion debate.” 1
A memo on the group’s website, “State of Abortion on 51st Anniversary of Roe v. Wade” claimed thar Republicans, “want to ban all abortion, everywhere, for any reason–even if it means that you will die as a result.” 4 The memo further claims that following the Dobbs decision in 2022, “anti-abortion extremists and their Republican allies have engaged in a race to the bottom, clambering to pass cruel bans in the face of near-constant reports of the harm these bans cause to pregnant people and families. Regardless of claims of “moderation,” exceptions, or compromise, Republicans and anti-abortion extremists are working in lockstep to pass a national ban.” 4 One such example in the memo had the group claim, “Idaho Republicans are fighting to ensure doctors can’t perform abortions in cases where the patient’s health is in ‘serious jeopardy’ or faces other serious complications, in conflict with federal law.” 5 4
Equity Initiatives
According to its website, Reproductive Freedom for All advocates a “Road Map to Equity” through policy recommendations based on the concept of “intersectionality” as well as concepts of “anti-racism” as well as “diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).” 2 6
The group’s website it further advocates for decriminalizing sex workers, protecting all LGBTQ rights, a commitment to “racial justice,” providing reproductive health care for immigrants within the country, and upholding the right to vote. 2 6
According to its website, the group claims to provide required “anti-racism training” for employees and staff members including board members, plans to hire a “chief strategy, equity, and inclusion officer,” and providing “wellness benefits” including mental health coverage in health insurance as well as paid personal and vacation time. 6
