The Marvin Naiman and Margery Goldman Foundation is a private foundation based in Wilmington, Delaware which gives grants to many left-of-center organizations, including the J Street Education Fund, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the New Era Colorado Foundation, the New Israel Fund, and the Women Donors Network. 1

The foundation was started in 2005 by Margery Goldman after the death of her husband Marvin Naiman. 2 Goldman is the secretary of the Women Donors Network and has been active in left-of-center social and cultural issues for many years. 3

Grantmaking

Women Donors Network

The Foundation gave $30,000 to the Women Donors Network in 2019, with $10,000 designated to support the network’s Emergent Fund and $20,000 to support the Jean Hardisty Initiative. 4 According to the Women Donors Network, the Emergent Fund was established in 2016 to help “communities that were and continue to be under attack by federal policies and priorities.” The organization said these communities included “Muslim and Arab-American communities, Black people, Indigenous communities, LGBTQ communities, and all people of color.” 5

According to the Women Donors Network, the Jean Hardisty Initiative has “a long-term goal of eradicating structural inequality and eliminating the racialization of systems that uphold it.” 6 The network says the values of this initiative are “radical feminism, transformational organizing, and a commitment to confronting anti-Black racism.” 7 Alicia Garza, one of the co-founders of Black Lives Matter, has said, “Funding from WDN has given me the space to dream.” 8

2019 Grants

The Marvin Naiman and Margery Goldman Foundation has given money to many other left-of-center organizations. In 2019, the organization gave $5,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Colorado and to the J Street Education Fund. 9 The organization has also given money to the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, the New Era Colorado Foundation, the New Israel Fund, and the University of Denver. 10

2018 Grants

In 2018, the foundation gave $5,000 to the Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center, which according to the Center’s website was the first abortion clinic in Colorado. 11 12 The foundation also gave $2,500 to both Food and Water Watch and the United We Dream Network. 13 In addition, the Tides Foundation received $5,000 for its Voter Movement Fund, and the Southern Poverty Law Center received $1,000. 14

People

Margery Goldman is the president, secretary, treasurer, and director of the Marvin Naiman and Margery Goldman Foundation. 15 Goldman is the Secretary of the Board of Directors at the Women Donors Network. She worked on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, and later co-founded a children’s products company. 16 After the sale of the company, she married Marvin Naiman, a real estate developer and investor who died in 2005. 17 Following Naiman’s death, Goldman founded the Marvin Naiman and Margery Goldman Foundation. 18

In 2020, the Marvin Naiman and Margery Goldman Foundation had $306,723 in revenue and $292,859 in expenses. 19

Of its expenses, $269,398 were charitable disbursements, and the Foundation’s total assets were $2,931,656. 20 In 2019, the Foundation had $193,863 in revenue and $216,245 in expenses. 21 Its total assets were $2,917,701, and total charitable disbursements were $131,003. 22
