The Madrona Foundation is a private foundation based out of Seattle, Washington. It was founded in 2004. 1 It funds left-of-center advocacy groups including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), 2 the Tides Center, 2 Earthjustice, 3 and the Center For Investigative Reporting. 4
The Madrona Foundation gave $10,000 to the National Election Defense Coalition in 2019. 5 The National Election Defense Coalition stated it stands in “unwavering opposition to the far-right extremism that was galvanized by Donald Trump.” The National Election Defense Coalition claims far-right extremism is “driving” the Republican Party. It stated the GOP and the United State Supreme Court have “launched attacks” against women, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, people of color “and democracy itself.” 6
Finances
Madrona Foundation’s revenues reported $489,724 in revenues with total assets of $10 million in 2021. 7 Most of the foundation’s revenues came from the sale of assets or investments in 2021. 8 In 2020, total revenues were $1.6 million. 9
Leadership
Stephen Fish and Susanne Fish have held the roles of president, vice president, director and treasurer since the nonprofit was founded in 2004. Stephen Fish was listed as the president and treasurer through 2007. 9 Brian Fish took over as president in 2008 and was listed as an officer as of 2022. 10
Grantmaking
Free Speech For People
The Madrona Foundation gave a $1.37 million grant to Free Speech for People in 2020. 11 It was the largest donation in the foundation’s history. Free Speech For People is a left-of-center advocacy group that wants more campaign finance regulation and supports constitutional amendments to limit campaign spending by private organizations and individuals. 12 Free Speech For People was involved in a campaign to get President Donald Trump impeached that started on the day of Trump’s inauguration. 13
Voting Initiatives
After President Donald Trump was elected, the Madrona Foundation made donations to left-of-center organizations that attempt to influence elections. The Madrona Foundation gave money to the left-of-center Voter Participation Center 14 and the Voter Registration Project. 14
Middle East Initiatives
The Madrona Foundation has given money to groups involved in Middle East politics. The foundation has supported Just Vision, Inc., which supports an Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank. 15
The Madrona Foundation has given grants to Rabbis For Human Rights, which is best known for escorting Palestinian farmworkers collecting harvests. 16
The foundation has also supported the Middle East Research And Information Project. 17 The Middle East Research and Information Project does analysis on the politics of the Middle East and of the role of U.S. policy in the region. 18
