Jewschool is a left-of-center Jewish blog that publishes opinion writings on various topics including religion, politics, culture, and Israel. 1

The organization was created by Daniel Sieradski, a radical-left activist whom left-wing Jewish media outlet The Forward has called Antifa‘s “most prominent Jew.” 2 He was the national organizer of the now defunct Progressive Jews PAC, a political action committee that endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the 2016 presidential election. He was also a prominent protester during the Occupy Wall Street protests and has worked at the Jewish Telegraphic Agency as its digital media director. 3 4 5 6

Background

Jewschool Inc., commonly referred to as Jewschool, is a left-of-center Jewish blog created in 2002 by radical-left activist Daniel Sieradski, who has been associated with Antifa. 7 The organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. 8

The organization claims that since 2002, it “has been the largest Jewish, progressive online community,” which exists to “connect and broadcast” left-of-center Jewish activists. 9

Jewschool also lists itself as the “unofficial organ of the Jewish Resistance” to former president Donald Trump on its Twitter profile. 10

Jewschool publishes left-of-center opinion pieces on various topics, including religion, politics, culture, and Israel. 11

Following the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, Jewschool released a statement on its website condemning the massacre committed by the terrorist group Hamas but also claimed, “there is no military solution to Gaza” and also called for an “immediate ceasefire.” 12 In addition, the post claimed that, “the Israeli army is marching towards genocide.” 13

Funding

Jewschool provides limited information on its financial activities. According to the IRS exempt-organization search tool as of June 2023, its most recent tax filing was made in 2015, when it filed the E-Postcard declaring gross receipts of less than $50,000. 14

Jewschool was listed as a recipient of charitable disbursements made by the Jewish Foundation of Greater New Haven in 2017. 15

People

Daniel Sieradski is the founder of Jewschool and was a national organizer of the now-defunct Progressive Jews PAC, a political action committee that endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the 2016 presidential election. He was also seen as a prominent protester during the Occupy Wall Street protests and has worked as the Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s digital media director. 16 17 18

As of 2017, Sieradski was identified in media reports as a member of Antifa, short for “anti-fascist” or “Anti-Fascist action,” a radical-left extremist movement that opposes groups it considers “fascist,” including democratic, center-right conservatives. 19 20

Sieradski, whom left-wing Jewish media outlet The Forward has called “Antifa’s most prominent Jew,” 21 has claimed that the violence employed by Antifa is a “last resort” but also stated that there is nothing wrong with punching someone who, in the eyes of Antifa, is a racist or anti-Semite. 22

Sieradski’s profile was removed from Twitter in June 2017. While the reason for his ban was not made public, Sieradski claimed that it could have been due to “ongoing targeting” by right-of-center users on Twitter. Journalists also suggested it could have been because of tweets directed at Courtney Love after she called controversial Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour an “anti-Semitic terrorist” who used “feminism as a tool to promote her radicalism.” 23 24 25

Before the suspension of his account, Sieradski’s profile page displayed the Antifa flag, an anarchy symbol combined with the Star of David, and a banner image that displayed a baseball bat with the words “fash basher” (fash meaning fascist) marked on it. 26

Sieradski created a Google Chrome extension called the “Nazi Detector.” The extension was made to identify alleged white supremacists by name. He also made an add-on for internet browsers called “BS Detector” in 2016. The extension attached a red warning label next to links to website pages that he claimed promoted conspiracy theories, published misinformation, or were satirical in nature. 27

Sieradski targeted The Jerusalem Post, a broadsheet newspaper based in Jerusalem, Israel, after it published an op-ed about African migrants going to Israel. He tweeted to the outlet: “If your paper burned down and you all got cancer it would be too good for you,” on January 7, 2014. 28
