Bernard “Bernie” Sanders is a Vermont politician, currently serving as the state’s junior United States Senator. Sanders ran for the Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States in 2016. A self-described “democratic socialist,” Sanders is formally an independent but caucuses with the Senate Democrats.
