    Background

Handicap International U.S. (HI-US), also known as Humanity and Inclusion U.S., is the U.S.-based affiliate of Handicap International, an aid organization that provides humanitarian aid to refugees and persons displaced by armed conflict and natural disasters, including rehabilitation and support to persons with physical disabilities and the elderly. 4

The group changed its name to Humanity and Inclusion and became an international federation in 2010. The Humanity and Inclusion Federation, which is based in Lyon, France, has offices for its national associations in Belgium, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Handicap International’s national associations raise funds for global aid programs in more than 60 countries. Those programs are implemented by the Humanity and Inclusion Federation. 5 2

The national associations of Handicap International also play a “crucial role” by holding campaign events, fundraising, and lobbying politicians. According to its website, Handicap International U.S. works closely with United Nations, the World Bank, and nongovernmental organizations.  The group has advocated for the Mine Ban Treaty and the Convention on Cluster Munitions and is calling for the United States government to ban passive weapons such as mines. HI-US is also a supporter of the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. 2

Handicap International is a member organization of the United States International Council on Disabilities. 6
