Alliance for a Better Indiana works closely with Chicago-based Novel Messaging LLC, a campaign consultancy and advertising agency that also works for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Future Forward, and other Democratic Party-aligned organizations and campaigns. 3 More than one quarter of ABI’s spending over the 2020 and 2024 cycles went to Novel Messaging. 2
A case study on Novel Messaging’s website claims that ABI’s campaigns in three state House of Representatives districts were successful in convincing voters that “GOP candidates were corrupt, out of touch and frankly, dangerously weird” during the 2024 elections. 4 While Republican candidates won two of those targeted races, state Rep. Wendy Dant Chesser (D-Jeffersonville) won re-election to her seat by 876 votes out of 29,073 cast. 5
Since its founding in 2020 it has received contributions from union locals, PACs, or other entities controlled by the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers (IW); International Association of Sheet Metal Air, Rail, and Transportation (SMART) Workers; United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW); Communications Workers of America (CWA), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); United Association (UA); International Union of Operating Engineers; United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC); United Auto Workers (UAW); Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA); and Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association (OPCMIA). 2
During the 2024 election cycle, Alliance for a Better Indiana received $100,000 from the Indiana Political Action Committee for Education, which is controlled by the Indiana State Teachers Association. 6 That made it the second-largest recipient of donations from the teacher’s union PAC that cycle behind only Democratic candidate for governor, former schoolteacher, and state superintendent of public instruction Jennifer McCormick (D-IN). 7
ABI’s largest contribution in 2024 was $175,000 from the Hoosier Values Leadership Fund, a PAC controlled by Indiana Conservation Voters, the state affiliate of the League of Conservation Voters. 8
