United We Eat

Since 2025, the organization has operated chiefly as an organizer of mass sign-on letters in the name of the Kennedy-associated Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, directing that pressure at the Trump administration, U.S. Congressional Republicans, and Bayer-Monsanto over pesticide regulation and manufacturer liability. ^{4 5}

United We Eat is affiliated with the United We Eat Action Fund, the organization’s political arm. United We Eat’s organizational status was unclear as of mid-2026. ⁶

Background

Dave Murphy founded Food Democracy Now! in Iowa in 2008. Murphy co-chaired the 2012 campaign for California Proposition 37, a failed ballot measure to require labeling of genetically engineered foods and helped write and pass genetically modified organism-labeling statutes enacted in Connecticut and Maine in 2013. His writing has appeared in the left-wing magazine The Nation, at the Huffington Post, and in The Hill. ^{2 7}

United We Eat was founded by Murphy ahead of the 2024 election, and the organization was described as a fundraising organization for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign for president. ³

Activities

United We Eat’s principal activity has been coordinating sign-on letters related to pesticide regulation in July 2025, the organization and Moms Across America announced a letter signed by more than 500 leaders and organizations aligned with the “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) movement, addressed to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the second Trump administration’s MAHA Commission, demanding action against pesticides and opposing efforts the group described as shielding pesticide manufacturers from liability. ⁴

In August 2025, United We Eat organized a letter to President Donald Trump signed by more than 240 leaders and organizations opposing chemical and pesticide liability protections in the House version of the fiscal year 2026 Interior appropriations bill. Murphy said Republicans “must do more than ride the wave of MAHA’s high polling.” CNN reported that the letter later grew to roughly 350 signatories, including Children’s Health Defense, a nonprofit Kennedy previously chaired. ^{8 9 10 3}

A separate letter circulated within the coalition and signed by Murphy accused the Trump administration of a “profound contradiction,” asserting that while the administration claims to prioritize health, it continues to approve, expand, and normalize chemical exposures that it claims undermine that goal. ¹¹

After President Trump issued an executive order in February 2026 invoking the Defense Production Act to secure domestic supplies of glyphosate and phosphorus, Murphy called the order a “strategic mistake” and said President Trump “would not be in the White House this second time without those followers.” ¹²

Ahead of oral argument in Monsanto Co. v. Durnell, a U.S. Supreme Court case concerning liability for pesticide producers, Murphy told The Hill that people were “very disappointed in the Trump administration, especially the White House,” and predicted the administration’s position would be “one of many things that costs them the midterms this year.” The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 on June 25, 2026, in an opinion by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, that the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act expressly preempts state-law failure-to-warn claims requiring a cancer warning not mandated by Environmental Protection Agency-approved labeling, reversing a $1.25 million verdict against Monsanto. ^{13 5}
