Young Women for US (YW4US)

YW4US was created by a group of young women who campaigned for the election of the Biden–Harris presidential ticket in 2020, with the group working to promote the agenda of the Biden administration. It then later opposed actions by the second Trump administration. ^{2  3}

Background

Founded on December 8, 2020, Young Women for US is based in Washington, D.C. The group has endorsed a number of candidates, encourages political action such as letter writing and phone calls to voters, and civic volunteer action. ³ The group has partnered with Women Forward, a left-of-center feminist group. ⁴

Leadership Cohort

The Young Women for US Leadership Cohort is a volunteer political advocacy training program. The program teaches participants skills such as planning and hosting events, social media tips, and general education on U.S. government and election laws. ^{5  6}

Activities

2022 Elections

Young Women for US focuses on voter engagement and community mobilization, particularly during election cycles. In the 2022 midterm elections, the organization supported 94 candidates across various races, with 51 being elected. It conducted voter outreach through 10,728 phone calls targeting voters in Illinois, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, and sent 400 letters to voters in Texas. The group organized seven voter contact events during the midterms and two additional events for the Georgia runoff elections in December 2022. To expand its reach, YW4US recruited 108 volunteers and collaborated with six organizations to enhance its efforts. ^{7  2}

Statements and Policy Positions

The YW4US webpage lists several policy statements issued by the group. ³ Its “Statement on the January 6 Political Insurrection” decries the incident as a “sedition” committed by “insurrectionists” attempting a “failed coup.” ⁸ After the 2021 attacks at a Boulder, Colorado supermarket on March 22 and at two spas and a massage parlor in Atlanta, Georgia on March 16, YW4US issued a statement calling the incidents examples of “white supremacy.” ⁹ When the State of Texas passed Senate Bill 8, also known as the Texas Heartbeat Act, Young Women for US issued a statement opposing the abortion restriction law and supporting “reproductive justice.” ¹⁰

In addition, the group joined Social Security Works, a left-of-center social welfare organization, to “demand a clean debt ceiling increase” to “protect Social Security and Medicare” under the Biden administration. ¹¹

The YW4US website includes a link to donate to and support Ukrainian causes amid the post-2022 Ukraine-Russia War. ^{1  12}

The YW4US Instagram account endorsed Biden administration’s proclamation asserting the Equal Rights Amendment as the law of the land, and has celebrated the Transgender Day of Remembrance and the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. ^{13  14  15}
