Fridays For Future International (FFFI) is a decentralized international movement that facilitates student strikes. It was formed in 2018 following Greta Thunberg’s sit-in on the steps of the Swedish Parliament protesting a claimed lack of action to address the supposed climate crisis. The organization claims to have representation in 7,500 cities and connection to 14 million people internationally. 1
FFFI organizes student strikes every Friday and major protests twice per year to promote stronger action to implement the Paris Agreement on climate, ensure equal climate outcomes, and build support of the supposed united science behind those actions. 2 FFFI claims to be politically neutral while active on climate issues, but it has had to fight off attempts by Marxist-Leninist groups to gain control of the organization. 3
Fridays For Future United States (FFFUS) advocates for FFFI agenda items such as a declaration of a climate emergency, an end to reliable inexpensive fossil fuel exploration and extraction, the implementation of a national environmental education curriculum, investment in social equal outcomes, decolonization, deindustrialization, and holding colonial powers accountable for allegedly perpetrating environmental destruction. 4 5
Funding
Fridays For Future is mostly decentralized, with country, state and city-level organizations fundraising for themselves. In the United States, FFFUS is fiscally sponsored by the Hack Foundation. 6
The Hack Foundation was formed in 2014 with the design of engaging teenage programmers in a world-wide network through local organizations fiscally sponsored by Hack. HF claims initial funding from a variety of sources including $500,000 from Elon Musk in 2021. 7 8
Zachary Latta is president and co-founder of Hack Club. Christina Asquith, another co-founder, is the COO and founder of the Fuller Project that advocates an increase in reporting by women and girls in major newsrooms. 9 10
FFFUSA claims membership from groups in 51 American cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, and Atlanta. The local groups make demands beyond the those of FFFUSA. For instance, FFF Seattle demands free public transportation, public-owned affordable housing, and divestment from Puget Sound Energy. 11 12

End the Era of Fossil Fuels
FFFUSA organized National Days of Action to End the Era of Fossil Fuels as a direct message to President Biden in the summer of 2023. Co-organizers of the event included left-leaning Project Sunrise, 350.org, and anti-nuclear energy Indigenous Environmental Network with lead sponsors including Green New Deal supporting Center for Popular Democracy (CPD), Zero Hour, the 350 Network Council, the Climate Organizing Hub, and left-of center People vs. Fossil Fuels. 18 19

FFF Canada celebrated the Ontario, Canada court’s decision in support of plaintiffs in Mathur v. Ontario, a dispute over carbon reduction targets that returned the case to a lower court. 26
FFFI posted a call to end overconsumption on Facebook that included an appeal to sign a petition calling for a normal economy defined as one that requires changing our socio-economic system, the end of war, and inclusivity. 27 28
A FFFI post on November 1, 2024 shared a quote from a Carbon Brief analysis that a victory for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election could result in a four billion ton increase in United States emissions by 2030. The group included a disclaimer in the post that it is non-partisan. 29 30
FFF Canada website calls for people to “step away” from social media that is not owned by Canadians and rely on reputable, independent news for information. 31
Luisa Neubauer, a German climate activist from Fridays for Future, commented in a Mother Jones article following former President Donald Trump second election to the presidency in 2024 that his heartbreak over the election was real and that it felt like the “world is going to end” due to President-elect Trump’s skepticism of the climate change movement. 32
