North Carolina Justice Center is a left-of-center think tank and policy advocacy group focusing on North Carolina state issues. It is a member of the Economic Analysis and Research Network of state-level policy groups associated with the labor union-aligned Economic Policy Institute.
In 2007, the North Carolina Justice Center acquired NC Policy Watch, a local media initiative designed to report, “progressive commentary and analysis about state policy and politics.” 1 In February 2023, a joint media release by NC Policy Watch editor and director Rob Schofield, States Newsroom Director and Publisher Chris Fitzsimon, and North Carolina Justice Center Executive Director Reggie Shuford Center announced that NC Policy Watch would become a state affiliate of media network nonprofit States Newsroom by March 1, 2023. Schofield commented, “Our team of veteran, award-winning journalists has a record of high-impact journalism over the last decade…becoming a fully integrated part of States Newsroom will give us the tools and platform to continue that growth and increase our impact.” 1
Criticism of Trump Administration
North Carolina Justice Center signed a letter condemning the immigration policy of the Trump Administration and urging American CEOs not to employ anyone involved with the policy. It accused these officials of being directly guilty for physical abuse, sexual assault, and even the death of illegal immigrant children. The letter was titled “An Open Letter to America’s CEOs” and was dated April 6, 2019. 2
