National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) is a left-of-center organization that provides training and assistance to statewide and territorial coalitions seeking to prevent domestic violence. 1 Despite its name, NNEDV does not provide direct counseling or crisis services. 2

NNEDV has signed on to a letter written by the left-of-center National Women’s Law Center calling for expanded Title IX reform to increase protections for LGBT individuals. 3 In June 2023, NNEDV commemorated what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and called for the creation of abortion safe havens. 4

NNEDV supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement, 5 stated that it “mourns” the loss of Roe v. Wade and the purported federal right to abortion it secured, and is committed to the left-wing concepts of racial, economic, and reproductive justice. 6 The organization has also issued disclaimers regarding use of the word “women” 7 and claimed that the critical race theory-influenced concept of systemic racism is “centuries deep” in the United States. 8

History and Leadership

National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) was originally founded in 1990 as the Domestic Violence Coalition on Public Policy. 9

In 1994, Domestic Violence Coalition on Public Policy led efforts to pass the Violence Against Women Act. In 1996, the Domestic Violence Coalition on Public Policy changed its name to NNEDV. 10

As of July 2023, Jean Treuthart is the interim president and CEO of NNEDV. Prior to joining NNEDV, she was the interim CEO of the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati and the CEO of YWCA York. She helped organize an internal equity plan to discuss the critical race theory-influenced concept of racial inequities. Treuhthart is also a trained facilitator for left-wing education consultant Glenn Singleton’s Courageous Conversations on Race. 11 She has attended trainings from Harvard University’s Kennedy School and the Aspen Institute’s Better Arguments Project. 12

Ken Pentico is the director of NNEDV’s economic justice division. 13

Activities and Funding

National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) is a left-of-center organization that advocates against domestic violence and provides training and assistance to statewide and territorial coalitions against domestic violence. 14 Despite its name, NNEDV does not provide direct counseling or crisis services. 15

NNEDV supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement, 16 “mourns” the loss of Roe v. Wade, and is committed to the left-wing concepts of racial, economic, and reproductive justice. 17 NNEDV has also claimed that Trump administration immigration policies hurt domestic violence survivors. 18

NNEDV has said that the critical race theory-influenced concept of systemic racism is “centuries deep” in the United States. NNEDV works for the left-wing concept of an “equitable world” and has said that it will work to dismantle how it believes white supremacy permeates society and technology. 19

In April 2023, NNEDV established a critical race theory-influenced Economic Justice and Domestic Violence Advisory Council with funding from the Allstate Foundation. The advisory council’s 2023 report recommends that far-left diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements should include salary and racial assessments and claims that positions of power and higher pay are often held by white women, who “have the ability to stay in the movement longer and work their way up, given their increased access to generational wealth made possible by institutional racism.” 20

NNEDV membership includes 56 state and U.S. territorial coalitions against domestic violence. 21 Its programming includes efforts to make domestic violence a national priority, advancing economic opportunities for domestic violence survivors, amplifying media coverage of domestic violence cases, educating survivors on technology use, and building the capacity of local and statewide coalitions against domestic violence, and promoting federal domestic violence-related legislation. 22

Policy Positions

In November 2020, the National Network to End Domestic Violence congratulated President-elect Joe Biden (D) and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris (D) for their victory in the 2020 presidential election and said it looked forward to working with the new administration. 23

NNEDV has praised Biden administration policies on gender-related issues, including the establishment of the White House Gender Policy Council. 24

NNEDV has signed on to a letter written by the left-of-center National Women’s Law Center calling for expanded Title IX reform to increase protections for LGBT individuals. 25 NNEDV has also issued a disclaimer regarding its use of the word “women,” saying that the rights it discussed in one article are for all people capable of pregnancy. 26

In June 2023, NNEDV commemorated what would have been the 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling in a press release that labeled abortion services as “essential healthcare.” 27 NNEDV opposed the Dobbs v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and has called for the creation of abortion safe havens. 28 In 2023, NNEDV also filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court with activist organizations including Everytown for Gun Safety and Giffords to call for the Supreme Court to uphold the ban on possession of firearms by persons subject to domestic-violence restraining orders in the case US v. Rahimi. 29 30

Funding

National Network to End Domestic Violence receives funding from individual contributions and grants. 31

In 2021, NNEDV received $10,000 from the Boston Foundation. NNEDV received $386,000 from the Allstate Foundation in 2020 for left-wing economic-justice programming. 33

NNEDV received grants of $100,00 from Major League Baseball in 2018, 34 $100,000 from the National Domestic Violence Hotline in 2015, 35 and $5,000 from the NoVo Foundation in 2014. 36 NNEDV has received other grants from the AMG Foundation 37 38 and Greater Boston Legal Services. 39
