The National Latino Engagement Fund is a project of Tides Advocacy that supports increasing Latino voter registration and mobilization. 1 The organization engages in voter registration drives and other efforts. 2

The National Latino Engagement Fund focuses primarily on immigration and migration issues, reconciliation and human rights, voter education, and voter registration. It also advocates for public policy. 3

Funding

In 2012, the Atlantic Advocacy Fund, a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization affiliated with Atlantic Philanthropies, gave $700,000 to the organization. 4

The National Education Association, a leading teachers union, gave National Latino Engagement Fund $125,000, according to the union’s 2012-2013 financial disclosure form with the U.S. Department of Labor. 5

Tides Advocacy

Tides Advocacy lists several high profile left-leaning organizations as its partners on equality and human rights issues, as well as on electoral activism. These include Demos Action, Dream Defenders, Electoral Justice Project, Florida Rights Restoration Project, and Justice Teams Network. 6 7

Tides Advocacy is a lobbying arm of the Tides Nexus, the set of left-progressive advocacy entities centered on the Tides Foundation. It focuses on the creation of, financing for, and consultation with various left-of-center organizations. 8

The organization was established in 1992, originally called “The Tsunami Fund” in San Francisco, California. 9 Then, in 2006, the organization changed its name to the “Tides Advocacy Fund.” 10 In 2010, the organization again changed its name to “The Advocacy Fund.” 11 Finally, in 2017 the group was renamed “Tides Advocacy,” its current name. 12
