Association of National Advertisers (ANA) is an industry association for advertising firms that represents more than 1,600 companies, including 1,100 client-side marketers that represent an estimated 20,000 brands. ANA members spend approximately $400 billion in marketing and advertising annually. 1

ANA has expressed support for the far-left Black Lives Matter movement 2 and the critical race theory-influenced concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 3 In 2020, ANA opposed Trump administration policies aimed at protecting individuals’ speech online and curtailing online censorship. 4

ANA’s strategic partners include Amazon Ads, technology company Google, social media company Meta (formerly known as Facebook), the United States Postal Service, and Walmart Connect. 5

History and Leadership

Association of National Advertisers was originally founded in 1910 as the Association of National Advertising Managers. This organization aimed to promote relationships between regional and national advertising industries, manufacturers and dealers, and advertisers and agencies. 5 1

Bob Liodice is the CEO of ANA. 6 Liodice first joined ANA as a senior vice president in 1995 and is a member of the boards of directors of The Advertising Council, Better Business Bureau National Partner Program, Geopath, Advertising Educational Foundation, Digital Advertising Alliance, Trustworthy Accountability Group, and World Federation of Advertisers (WFA). He is also the co-chair of the ANA Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing, chair of the Privacy for America coalition, and is on the governing bodies of the Partnership for Responsible Addressable Media and the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM). 6

Liodice has made Federal Election Commission-reportable campaign contributions to the campaigns of U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY), and the 2006 U.S. Senate campaign of then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY). 7

ANA is headquartered in New York City 8 and has offices in Washington, D.C. 1

Activities and Funding

Association of National Advertisers is an industry association for advertising firms. It represents 1,600 domestic and international companies, including 1,100 client-side marketers that represent an estimated 20,000 brands and 500 marketing solution providers including suppliers, agencies, law firms, media companies, and consultants. ANA members spend approximately $400 billion in marketing and advertising annually. 1 ANA has testified in support of its members before Congress, state legislatures, federal regulatory agencies, and the courts. 1

ANA’s strategic partners include Amazon Ads, technology company Google, social media company Meta (formerly known as Facebook), the United States Postal Service, Walmart Connect, and others. 5 The organization supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement 2 and encouraged brands to “step up” in support of Stop AAPI Hate. 9 ANA supports the critical race theory-influenced concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion. It has established a gender equality practice, SeeHer, and the Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing to drive the left-of-center concepts of equity and inclusion in marketing. 3

ANA operates a diversity, equity, and inclusion forum that supports critical race theory-influenced conceptions of social justice 10 and has expressed the view that advertising teams can bring more value to its members if they are more racially diverse. 1 ANA has claimed that men and individuals younger than 40 years of age are over-represented in advertising. 11 In 2020, ANA opposed Trump administration policies aimed at protecting individuals’ speech online and curtailing online censorship. 4

ANA offers member workshops, training, professional certification, and members-only conferences for to support its members and advance its objectives. 12 It also conducts business-to-business marketing 13 and has business-to-business marketing practices in Atlanta, Georgia; Northern California; Chicago, Illinois; Kansas City, Missouri; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; New York, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 14

ANA operates Association of National Advertisers Nonprofit Federation, which represents 1500 different marketing and fundraising organizations in the nonprofit sector. 15 It also runs 12 different committees including a critical race theory-influenced diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, 16 LGBTQ+ forum to advocate for the inclusion of LGBT individuals in advertising, 17 and a multicultural marketing ad diversity committee. 18

In 2019, ANA helped launch the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) with the World Federation of Advertisers. As of 2023, ANA is a member of GARM, 19 which is in partnership with the World Economic Forum as of May 2023. 20

Funding

Association of National Advertisers receives its funding from membership fees and program service revenue. 21

In 2019, ANA reported revenue of $55,702,923 and expenses of $55,757,539. In 2018, ANA reported revenue of $51,239,732 and expenses of $49,962,634. 22
