According to an April 2026 report by the New York Times, the group has contributed roughly $6 million towards campaigns in the 2026 midterm election cycle while claiming it could contribute up to $40 million by November 2026. ²

In 2025, American Opportunity Action made two contributions of $150,000 to Protect MI Constitution from Special Interests, constituting “effectively all of the committee’s funding.” The recipient group runs the campaign opposed to Proposal 2026-01, which would convene a convention to amend the Michigan constitution. ^{5 2} That same year, it contributed over $3 million to “an anti-gerrymandering effort in Missouri” led by the group People Not Politicians. ^{5 2}

Leadership

American Opportunity Action does not list any staff on its website. ¹ The group’s filing with the Internal Revenue Service lists Preston Elliott as its “principal officer.” ⁶ Elliott is listed as the campaign manager for New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s (D-NY) 2026 reelection campaign. Previously, he worked as the director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s Independent Expenditure fund and ran the campaigns for several Democratic Party candidates including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) in 2022 and former U.S. Sen. Jon Tester’s (D-MT) in 2012. ^{3 4}

Christina Reynolds has been listed as a spokesperson of American Opportunity Action. ⁵ Reynolds is the founder of Break Glass Strategic Communications and the senior vice president of communications and content at EMILY’s List. Previously, Reynolds worked in several positions with Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, the Obama administration, and  Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. ⁷
