Vigil for Democracy is a left-of-center agitation organization that organizes rallies, boycotts, protests, strikes, and other actions to “mass mobilize against tyranny” 1 and advocate for left-of-center policy outcomes. 2 3 4 5 6

Vigil for Democracy supported the Ruth Sent Us-led protests at the homes of conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justices following a leaked opinion suggesting the constitutional right to abortion recognized in Roe v. Wade would be overturned in 2022. 7 Vigil for Democracy holds that the United States is a “theocracy” that is run by a 6-3 religious fundamentalist majority on the U.S. Supreme Court 8 and claims the Supreme Court will “protect white Christianity.” 9

Vigil for Democracy supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement, defunding the police, 10 11 and citizenship for illegal immigrants in the United States. 12 The organization also supported the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice-designate Ketanji Brown Jackson 13 and the impeachment, indictment, and imprisonment of former President Donald Trump. 14

History and Leadership

Vigil for Democracy was founded in Phoenix, Arizona, in October 2021. 15

Snowden Bishop is Vigil for Democracy’s member and manager. 16 She is also the editor-in-chief of “The Cannabis Reporter” 17 and the vice chairman of Friends of Africa International. 18 Bishop is a juried member of the left-of-center Society of Environmental Journalists and a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists. In 2014, she trained with former Vice President Al Gore (D) and was inducted into the Gore-founded Climate Reality Project’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps. 19

Activities

From May 8 until June 30, 2022, Vigil for Democracy hosted a “strike for choice” event endorsed by left-of-center and pro-abortion organizations including Wall of Moms, Wall of Many, Raging Grannies, Code Pink, Resistance SF, Women’s March San Francisco (a fiscally sponsored project of Social Good Fund), 20 21 radical left-wing Refuse Fascism, Kavanaugh Off Our Court, Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights, Ruth Sent Us, and Pro Choice With Heart 22 to “expose the Supreme Court” while it considers overturning Roe v. Wade. 23 24

In 2022, Vigil for Democracy supported the primary campaign of left-progressive Jessica Cisneros (D-TX) against Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX). 25 Vigil for Democracy protested at the residence of former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) with other left-of-center groups including Ruth Sent Us and Rise Up for Abortion after Pelosi endorsed Cuellar’s re-election campaign. 26

In 2020, Vigil for Democracy called President Donald Trump a “lifelong sinner” and asked its supporters to “rise up now” to stop what it identified as “Christo fascism” in the 2020 election. 27

Vigil for Democracy supports the far-left Black Lives Matter movement and defunding the police; 28 29 claims “women’s constitutional rights are being stolen and voting rights are being erased;” 30 and supports citizenship for illegal immigrants in the United States 31 and “civil disobedience and inconvenience” to address what it identifies as a climate emergency. 32 Previously, the organization supported the impeachment, indictment, and imprisonment of President Donald Trump. 33

Vigil for Democracy is also involved in several left-of-center strike campaigns to “struggle against fascism” and “connect humanity in love and peace.” 34 These strikes include the #StrikeforClimate, #UnaDiaSinImmigrantes (A Day Without Immigrants), #StrikeForTruth, #StrikeForChoice, and #StrikeForJustice. 35

Supreme Court Activism

Vigil for Democracy focuses much of its activities on the U.S. Supreme Court, which it claims will work to “protect white Christianity.” 36 The organization supported the Ruth Sent Us-led protests at the homes of U.S. Supreme Court Justices following a leaked opinion suggesting the court would overturn the constitutional right to abortion recognized under Roe v. Wade in 2022. 37

Vigil for Democracy has said the United States is a “theocracy” that is run by a 6-3 religious fundamentalist majority on the U.S. Supreme Court and called for “mass protests” to protest the power structure. 38 Vigil for Democracy supported the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice-designate Ketanji Brown Jackson, 39 runs a fundraising program to send flowers to U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, 40 and has said that all Trump-appointed judges are “100 percent extreme religious conservatives.” 41
