Background
Apax Partners is a London-based private equity advisory firm with offices in New York. The group describes itself as a “business building” enterprise which consults with the heads of “high-potential companies” and recommends a course of action to improve their overall results and profits. 1 It claims to be traced from a collaboration between three financiers in 1970: Alan Patricof of the United States, Ronald Cohen of the United Kingdom, and Maurice Tchenio of France. 6
As of 2025, Apax claims to have raised a total of roughly $80 billion across “tech,” “services,” and “internet/consumer” sectors while employing over 350 workers with seven offices worldwide. 1
Divisions
As of 2025, Apax’s Apax X Fund claimed to have 54 companies across 18 countries in its portfolio, managing a total of $11 billion. 7 Other listed divisions at the time included Apax Digital Growth, Apax Mid-Market Israel, Apax Global Impact, Apax Listed Private Equity, and Apax Credit. 1
As of March 2024, the Apax Foundation, Apax Partners’ corporate philanthropy, claimed to have donated a total of more than £30 million (approximately $40 million USD). 8 As of 2025, its partners include London-based refugee group Breaking Barriers, New York-based education and professional development equity group Opportunity Network, United Kingdom-based welfare group Impetus, and New York-based entrepreneurial training group BUILD NYC. 9
Apax Partners claims its “Operational Excellence Practice” adheres to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 10 Apax Partners also claims to be committed to diversity and inclusion policies. 11
Bonterra
In 2021, Apax Partners, through its Apax X technology fund, acquired EveryAction, Social Solutions, and CyberGrants, three nonprofit software management companies that provided services to left-of-center clients. These entities were merged into one “social good” philanthropic software company named Bonterra. As a result of this merger, Bonterra came to have a network of 650,000 nonprofit organizations that, as of 2024, had over 38 million donors and volunteers. Apax claimed its decision reflected its “long-standing focus on ESG.”3
In 2021, Apax Partners also purchased NGP VAN, a long-standing political software data system which allegedly stores data for the Democratic National Committee (DNC). As of April 2025, due to allegations that NGP VAN has made significant layoffs and budget cuts since the purchase, Democratic Party-connected clients have allegedly argued for an alternate system to replace NGP Van. 12 13 4
