Background

Youth vs. Apocalypse is a left-of-center climate activist organization. It is a fiscally sponsored project of the Alliance for Global Justice (AFGJ), a prominent incubator of left-wing and radical-left organizations in the United States. All donations to YVA are made through Alliance for Global Justice. 3

Activities

Youth vs. Apocalypse mobilizes young people to protest against the energy industry in the name of fighting climate change. It focuses on the way climate change allegedly impacts racial justice and aims to “prioritize the voices and the leadership of those who have been abused by the system that causes climate change, and by those who are most affected by pollution.” In fighting climate change, YVA believes it has “a unique opportunity to rebuild society” based on the principles of sustainability, easily accessed mental-health programs, taxpayer-funded health care, and the abolition of racism and sexism. 4

In April 2023, Youth vs. Apocalypse received coverage from Teen Vogue, the subsidiary of Vogue magazine targeted at teenage readers and notable for its favorable coverage of radical-left movements. The reporter quoted numerous YVA members on their views regarding climate change. One member, an 18-year-old named Lizbeth Ibarra, linked climate change to racism: “[Chevron is] poisoning our lungs, the air, the soil. Refineries are often placed in communities, like Richmond, with low-income people of color. You don’t see that where there’s mostly white people. It’s environmental racism.” She also said one must link climate change to “racism, capitalism, sexism” to get youth interested in activism. 5 These arguments are reflected in YVA’s official “Points of Unity,” a manifesto of principles. 6 As of April 2024, Ibarra is a member of YVA’s board of directors. 7

YVA runs campaigns with its supporters, such as “#CA Youth Vs Big Oil” which aims to convince California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) to suspend all permits to oil companies. 8
