We Want Democracy (also known as #WeWantDemocracy) is a left-of-center activist group that advocates for substantial changes to the United States Constitution and the American electoral system through “sustained mass non-violent protest,” including abolishing the Senate, electing the president by a national popular vote, and having Supreme Court Justices chosen based on “proportional representation.” 1 2 3
We Want Democracy responded to the October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel by endorsing a letter claiming the attack was justified following “decades of Israeli state-sanctioned violence.” 4
Activities and Demands
We Want Democracy is a left-of-center activist group that opposes the state of Israel and calls for substantive changes to the United States Constitution and the American electoral system through “sustained mass non-violent protest.” 5 6 7
We Want Democracy has seven primary “demands,” which it labels as federal voting rights, abolishing the electoral college, proportional representation to promote third parties, abolishing the Senate, remaking the Supreme Court, subjecting all representatives to recall, and “Ban Fascists From Government.” 8
We Want Democracy advocates in favor of allowing felons to vote, automatic voter registration, the federal government taking over election law from the states, and making election day a federal holiday. 9 We Want Democracy also calls for a national popular vote to elect the U.S. president. 10
We Want Democracy calls for proportional representation of representative districts to reduce gerrymandering; party list voting instead of voting for specific candidates; expanding the House of Representatives to 827 seats; providing Washington, D.C. two U.S. Representatives; and ranked-choice voting. We Want Democracy proposed this system as a way that could improve representation for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the Green Party. 11
We Want Democracy claims the U.S Senate is a “marketing” ploy by America’s ruling class to have a British House of Lords in the United States. It asserts that the Senate reveals the “ruling class’s contempt for the citizenry and their ability to self-govern.” 12
We Want Democracy advocates for a “new proportional representation government [to] choose 9 justices based on proportional representation.” The organization claims it has no position on whether to increase the number of Supreme Court Justices. 13
We Want Democracy calls for all elected officials to face recalls at any time and be subject to removal from office immediately if the representative “goes against the wishes of the people.” 14
We Want Democracy claims that former President Donald Trump is a fascist who has “worked to subvert democracy” and who should be “barred for life from public office.” The organization asserts that former President Trump attempted “to eliminate whatever semblance of democracy we currently have and replace it with an outright fascist dictatorship.” 15
Additionally, We Went Democracy argues that if the Untied States had a purer form of Democracy, Roe v. Wade would be the law of the land and abortion legalized nationwide. 16
Anti-Israel Advocacy
Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attack on Israel, We Want Democracy re-posted several posts on X (formerly Twitter) calling Israel’s response to the attacks a “war on Palestinian children”; claiming Israel “incinerated” Palestinian refugees; and alleging “genocidal Israeli violence in Gaza.” 17 18 19 20
We Want Democracy also endorsed the Philly Palestine Coalition’s statement that justified the October 7th terrorist attack, claiming the attack was “provoked by decades of Israeli state-sanctioned violence” during a “56-year occupation.” 21
