Activities and Funding
SanctionsKill Campaign is a global 16 far-left activist campaign that uses petitions, webinars, 17 18 teaching toolkits, 19 direct activism, and social media campaigns to call for an end to all United States-led economic sanctions. 20 Sanctions Kill opposes all economic sanctions and has called sanctions “economic warfare” that are implemented in what Sanctions Kill considers “Western greed.” 21
Sanctions Kill’s founding statement claims United States-imposed sanctions violate international law, are a crime against humanity, and are a weapon of economic war that lead to shortages, hyperinflation, famines, disease, and poverty. 22
The organization claims that sanctions have caused some nations to miss their United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda targets 23 and published an article written by two Code Pink activists that called American sanctions “deadly, illegal, and ineffective.” 24
Far-left organization Popular Resistance has used Sanctions Kill’s toolkit to disseminate information about how the organization considers American-led sanctions to be a part of “American economic warfare.” 25
In 2021, Sacntions Kill published a report that calls U.S. sanctions deadly, destructive, and in violation of international law. The report claims that sanctions are a form of deadly aggression that have led to the imprisonment of diplomats in violation of international treaties, collective punishment that undermines international relations, and are designed to maintain U.S. global hegemony. The group also says that sanctions may create potential criminal and civil liability for U.S. authorities that implement sanctions. 26
Policy Activism
In 2024, Sanctions Kill called for the Biden administration to suspend weapons transfers to Israel; to restore funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA); and to stop attacking militant groups in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria. The organization also urged the Biden administration should listen to the World Court’s policy positions regarding the 2023-2024 Israel-Palestine war. 27
In the spring of 2024, Sanctions Kill supported protests against Israel on college campuses, calling Israel’s actions in the war a “genocide,” 28 a part of an American “imperial project,” and a “terror campaign.” 29
Sanctions Kill has called convicted murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal a “political prisoner” who was “unjustly convicted.” 30 The group has encouraged petitioners to support a petition to George Soros-backed 31 Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner (D) to overturn Abu-Jamal’s murder conviction. 32
