Mondoweiss started in 2006 as the personal blog of Philip Weiss, who was raised in a left-wing Jewish community. The website “recognize[s] that Jewish voices are often prioritized in discussions of Israel and seek[s] to challenge that dynamic by bringing a universalist focus to an issue that is commonly dominated by narrow points of view.” 1
Mondoweiss has claimed Israel had a “concentration camp” in Gaza, 5 has accused American Jews of “dual loyalty” in a centuries-old antisemitic trope, 6 frequently writes about a supposedly malevolent “Israel lobby” 7 8 and alleged “war crimes,” 3 and claimed in several articles over years that Israel has been committing “genocide.” 2 9 10
In addition to news and opinion, Mondoweiss also has an “activism” section, that runs articles such as one calling for “Jews to unite in the struggle against Zionism, apartheid and genocide,” 11 one about a U.S. Air Force veteran who left the service due to “U.S. funding and partnership of the genocide of Palestinians” and completed a hunger strike, 12 and another arguing that “higher education must boycott Tel Aviv University.” 13
Mondoweiss also ran an article claiming that labor activist Chris Smalls was “abducted by Israeli forces” when he arrived on the ship Handala, which was part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. 14 The Freedom Flotilla Coalition also sponsored environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s ship, Madleen, which arrived first. 15 However, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) called the Handala’s mission to “breach the blockade” “dangerous [and] unlawful,” and said it “undermine[s] ongoing humanitarian efforts.” The U.S. State Department also “dismiss[ed] the endeavor as a stunt,” calling it a “selfie flotilla.” 15
As of late July 2025, Philip Weiss remained senior editor of Mondoweiss and Yumna Patel was editor-in-chief. Michael Arria was the U.S. correspondent, Mohammed El-Kurd was the editor-at-large, Faris Giacaman was the Palestine editorial director, Tareq S. Hajjaj was the Gaza correspondent, Adam Horowitz was managing editor, Khader Jabber was digital director, Qassam Muaddi was Palestine staff writer, and James North was also editor-at-large. 1
Several Mondoweiss staffers have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) with antisemitic rhetoric and to malign Israel. Philip Weiss tweeted in August 2024, “Zionism is polio.” 16 As of early August 2025, Adam Horowitz’s bio on X simply read, “Zionism = Racism.” On August 1, 2025, he compared Gaza to Auschwitz. 17
In a July 2025 post, Yumna Patel criticized former President Barack Obama for mentioning Israeli hostages held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza at the beginning of his tweet. 18 On June 27, 2025, in response to a photo of units of blood that Israel sent to Gaza, Patel tweeted, “Zionist logic is carrying out a holocaust against a trapped population, and then congratulating themselves when they send blood to the population they are exterminating.” 19
On August 3, 2025, Mohammed El-Kurd reposted a tweet reading, “Israel is a malignant cancer that has to be excised if humanity is to have any hope of a moral future.” 20 In a June 26, 2025, tweet, he claimed there is a “dangerous & disingenuous premise that there is ‘an unprecedented rise in antisemitism. There isn’t,” 21 despite abundant evidence to the contrary. 22
Mondoweiss is fiscally sponsored by the Center for Economic Research and Social Change. 23 In 2024, Mondoweiss received $17,500 from the Yoosufani Family Foundation, 24 $10,000 from the Olivieri Johnston Family Foundation, 25 $2,500 from the MT Moro Foundation, 26 $2,000 from the Lehman-Stamm Family Fund, 27 and $1,000 from the Eissa A. Bateh and Brothers Foundation. 28
The Yoosufani Family Foundation is based in Austin, Texas and gave to other anti-Israel groups including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Foundation, Jewish Voice for Peace, and the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights in 2023. 24
