Momtivist (MV) is an activist network that engages families to pursue activism and civic engagement in the pursuit of left-of-center political goals. [1]
MV creates and promotes kid-friendly events, books, and articles that advances left-progressive policy goals and organizes “Progress Playdates” to encourage activism in promotion of those views and produces voter guide summaries for local and statewide races and issues. [2]
Activities
Momtivist produces a compendium of Los Angeles, California area left-of-center voting guides that summarizes the consensus on ballot measures and candidates for state-wide and local races. Guides that are reviewed include those produced by Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest socialist organization in the United States; LA Area Progressive Voter Guide, produced by an organization that calls for nationalization of elections; Action Cali; Knock LA, a left-wing online news organization; and LA Forward Action. On Facebook, the group promotes its Voter Guide Review and activism in favor of gun control and promotion of abortion pills. [9]
MV and Feminists in Action-Los Angeles sponsored “Ballots Over Broadway,” a fundraising event for the benefit of DemocraShe and Field Team 6. [10]
MV sponsored a New Year’s Climate Action Fair that provided attendees with a road map of climate actions for 2022. Co-sponsors included Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) Climate Collective, a climate change activist group, Ban Sup, a group supporting the reduction of plastic waste, LA Forward Action, an advocacy group for left-of-center policy, and Hang Out Do Good, a partner of MV. The organization promoted Gender Nation’s Celebrity Story Hour, a book sale with proceeds going to Gender Nation’s mission to donate LGBT-affirming books to school libraries. [17]
MV is present on Twitter but as of July 2022 had not Tweeted since June 29, 2018. Its most recent post on Instagram as of July 2022 was dated September 25, 2021. [18] [19]
People
Momtivist’s co-founders are film producer Jessica Stamen and Alisa Angelone, a clinical psychologist. Stamen is a film producer who worked for Echo Lake Productions and produced advocacy videos for Netflix; Fellow Americans, a graphics and video producer; Swing Left, a left-wing bundler of donations to the Democratic Party; and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). She has served as Southern California Education Lead for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, a group that supports Congressional action to limit the right to bear arms. Stamen is a founding member of Feminists in Action Los Angeles (FIA-LA), a left-of-center group that supports left-of-center female political candidates, defunding Las Angeles School Police Department, and critical race theory, and co-founder of DemocraShe. [24]
FIA-LA has partnered with MV in sponsoring a fundraiser for Field Team 6, that involved a number of left-of-center performers from musical theater. [25]
