Feminists in Action Los Angeles (FIA-LA) is a left-of-center activist network that supports female left-progressive political candidates, the elimination of the filibuster in the U.S. Senate, 1 the complete defunding and disbanding of the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD), 2 and the critical race theory-inspired notions of “racial justice.” 3 FIA-LA has opposed the use of zero carbon nuclear energy. 4

Activities

Feminists in Action Los Angeles was founded in 2016. 5 The group supports the critical race theory-inspired concept of “racial justice” 3 and aims to create a “queer-affirming space” that is free of the “tight grip of heteronormative thinking.” 6

In 2022, FIA-LA signed a petition organized by the left-of-center Sixteen Thirty Fund-sponsored Fix Our Senate supporting the elimination of the filibuster to increase Democratic Party power in the United States Senate by allowing the Democratic majority to pass legislation on a party-line vote. 1 FIA-LA also opposes restrictions on abortion, 7 encouraged donations to pro-immigration advocacy organization Immigrant Families Together to bail out detained illegal immigrants, 8 and supports the feminist organization DemocraShe. 9 10

FIA-LA supports the complete defunding and disbanding of the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD), 11 hosts book clubs in Los Angeles that address the critical race theory-inspired concept of “white privilege,” 12 and is a member of the left-progressive activist coalition Indivisible CA Statestrong. 13

The group has also canvassed in support of the campaign of Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA) 12 and hosted postcard writing sessions for left-progressive causes and in support of the unsuccessful congressional campaign of Christy Smith (D) and the successful U.S. Senate special election campaign of Doug Jones (D-AL). 12

Opposition to Nuclear Energy

In May of 2021, FIA-LA was one of 715 groups and businesses listed as a co-signer on a letter to the leadership of the U.S. House and Senate that referred to nuclear energy as a “dirty” form of energy production and a “significant” source of pollution. The letter asked federal lawmakers to reduce carbon emissions by creating a “renewable electricity standard” that promoted production of weather dependent power sources such as wind turbines and solar panels, but did not promote low carbon natural gas and zero carbon nuclear energy. 4

Nuclear power plants produce no carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gas emissions, and as of 2021 accounted for 19 percent of American electricity production—the largest source of zero carbon electricity in the United States. 14 An October 2018 proposal from The Nature Conservancy noted that zero-carbon nuclear plants produced 7.8 percent of total world energy output and recommended reducing carbon emissions by increasing nuclear capacity to 33 percent of total world energy output. 15

Fundraising

In 2020, FIA-LA supported a fundraiser featuring Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) with Momtivist to raise funds for left-of-center Higher Heights and Democratic Party-affiliated PAC Field Team 6’s work to “register Democrats and save the world.” 9 10 Tickets for this event were purchased through left-of-center pass-through organization ActBlue Civics. 16

FIA-LA has also partnered with the left-of-center Bake America Great to raise over $65,000 for abortion advocacy organization Planned Parenthood, the far-left Black Lives Matter LA, refugee resettlement organization Miry’s List, and the International Rescue Committee. 12

The organization is supported by Hollywood actresses 17 and has raised thousands of dollars for Miry’s List, hosted a “Resist-Dance Party” to raise funds for the P. F. Bresee Foundation, and worked with The Big Hundred to oppose the policies of the Trump administration. 12

Partner Organizations

Gun control advocacy organization Drain the NRA is an offshoot of Feminists in Action Los Angeles. 12
