The Bronx Anti-War Coalition is a far-left New York City-based organization that advocates for ending the U.S. military budget and reallocating that funding to community programs, public housing, health care, and other issue areas. Following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, the organization has focused on opposing what it calls the Israeli occupation of Palestine and in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza. The organization was also an endorser of the March on Washington for Gaza, a public demonstration on January 13, 2024 in Washington, D.C., at which attendees advocated for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. 1 2 3 4

Bronx Anti-War Coalition sometimes refers to itself as a “Lënapehòkink (Bronx) based working-class, BIPOC-led, anti-imperialist, direct-action coalition,” referring to the Lenape Indian tribes that lived on the northeastern seaboard of the United States before European colonization. 5

Mission

Bronx Anti-War Coalition is a far-left, anti-Israel activist organization located in the Bronx, New York. The principal goal of the organization is to end the U.S. military budget, which it claims upholds “U.S. imperialists interests all over the world” which engages in war “on behalf of corporations.” The organization asserts that funding the U.S. military deprives communities of resources for healthcare, housing, homelessness, schools, anti-addiction programs, and technology. 6

The organization’s website appears to be defunct. As of July 2024, the latest archive of the website at the Internet Archive on January 24, 2024 shows a “404” error indicating the page could not be found. 7 The next-most-recent internet archive that features the group’s homepage without an error code is from June 3, 2023. On that date the group listed no upcoming events. 8

Activities

Previous events archived on the group’s apparently defunct website include a protest on March 19, 2023 against U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for attending an event at a local high school that promoted military recruitment; a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event on January 21, 2023 that focused on what the group called “MLK’s ant-war, anti-imperialist, and anti-capitalist positions”; and a January 14, 2023, ”Rally for Peace”  at Times Square hosted with Code Pink, the New York Communist Party, and the United National Antiwar Coalition, among other groups. 9

The group’s first event was a Bronx Anti-War Rally held on March 26, 2022, at 3rd Avenue and 149th Street in the Bronx that advocated for putting “people’s Needs before War Profiteers Greed.” At this event, activists claimed the New York Police Department and U.S. military were tools of white supremacy and imperialism. Based upon photos provided by the group, the rally appeared to be attended by roughly a dozen people. 10 11

After Bronx Anti-War Coalition’s website became defunct, the group still regularly updated its Facebook page, including promoting events for its followers. As of May 2024, the group’s Facebook page had 161 followers. 12

On May 18, 2024, Bronx Anti-War Coalition promoted a pro-Gaza event with their “comrades” at Within Our Lifetime, a Palestinian-led anti-Zionist organization in New York. Bronx Anti-War Coalition and Within Our Lifetime were jointly demonstrating for “Nakba 76,” a slogan referring to the 76th anniversary of the foundation of Israel, sometimes called “the catastrophe,” or “nakba,” in Arabic and by Palestinian nationalists. 13 14

On May 6, 2024, Bronx Anti-War Coalition invited followers to a book launch for A Realistic Path to Peace by Dee Knight, which advocates for an “End [to] Zionist Apartheid” and to “Restore Historic Palestine.” 15

Other events  and advocacy featured on Bronx Anti-War Coalition’s Facebook page include a Bronx Rally for Gaza, which included activism to support pro-Gaza encampments on college campuses; a call for Israel to release “nearly 10,000 Palestinian hostages detained by the criminal ‘israeli’ [sic] occupation”; a rally against former Presidents Barack Obama (D) and Bill Clinton (D) as well as President Joe Biden (D), whom the group called “war criminals, terrorists, genocidal Zionists, imperialist pigs”; and promotion of an essay written by a Palestinian living in New York entitled “Palestinian women against bourgeois feminism.”  16
