United States Student Association Foundation (USSAF) is a left-of-center student membership group that sought to increase government regulation of education. 1 USSAF has also supported left-of-center policy goals, including the implementation of race-based social policies like devoting spaces and resources at universities exclusively to ethnic minorities. 2
USSAF does not engage in much activism on its own. Rather, through a cost-sharing agreement, USSAF funds the United States Student Association (USSA), an advocacy organization which directly engages in public policy initiatives. 3
Funding
In 2018, USSAF received $99,493 in contributions,4 $19,700 in program service revenue,5 and $118,667 in total revenue. 6 That year, the organization reported $79,887 in expenses. 7 At the end of the year, USSAF reported $243,532 in assets. 8
In 2018, USSAF received funding from prominent left-of-center grantmaking organizations. USSAF received $75,000 from NEO Philanthropy9 and $15,000 from the Tides Foundation. 10
Leadership
Joselina Garcia is president of USSAF. 11 Prior to joining the organization, she served as the rimary Student Negotiator for the Department of Education Borrower Defense Negotiated Rulemaking Committee. 12 Garcia is a consultant at Solidarity Strategies, a Democratic Party-aligned political consulting firm. 13
