Muslim Aid USA (MAUSA, not to be confused with Islamic Relief USA) is a Muslim advocacy organization that promotes the critical race theory-influenced concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion within every level of its operation. 1

MAUSA supports the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and has celebrated the United Nations’ World Day of Social Justice. 2

The group focuses its efforts on emergency relief to the people in the Palestinian Territories and other areas impacted by natural disaster, hunger, poverty, disease, and other situations. 3 4

History and Leadership

Muslim Aid USA was originally given tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service in 2014 as Muslim Aid America. 5 In 2018, Muslim Aid America became Muslim Aid USA. 6

Azhar Azeez is the CEO of MAUSA. Previously, he was the president of the Islamic Society of North America and the North Texas Islamic Council. Azeez advised President Barack Obama and President Jimmy Carter. 7 He opposed President Donald Trump 8 and congratulated Joe Biden (D) for his victory in the 2020 presidential election. 9

Activities and Funding

MAUSA aims to provide help to individuals who are the victims of natural disasters or conflicts or suffering from poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, discrimination, homelessness, debt, unemployment, and other situations. The group has provided financial assistance through emergency response, poverty alleviation, and health care efforts. 10

MAUSA has also provided emergency relief to the people in the Palestinian Territories. 11 MAUSA also has an orphan sponsorship program, winterization program, and plans to install water desalination plants in Gaza. The group has trained health care staff, provided aid to refugee camps, and built schools in Yemen, Pakistan, and Ethiopia. It also distributes classroom materials to students in 7 different countries, sponsors orphan programs, and others. 12

MAUSA supports the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 13 and celebrated the United Nations’ World Day of Social Justice. 14

In 2021, MAUSA spent $10,240,363 for natural disaster response efforts in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Turkey, Lebanon, the Palestinian Territories, and Yemen. This spending included support for hospitals, support of Oxfam America for various services, education, and transitional shelters. That same year, MAUSA also spent $1,211,254 to support refugees in the Middle East and an additional $1,078,333 on education, Arabic language programs, and orphan sponsorship programs. 15

Funding

Muslim Aid USA receives funding from individual donations and grants. 16 In 2021, MAUSA reported revenue of $16,966,673 and expenses of $14,812,428. In 2020, the organization reported revenue of $10,271,477 and expenses of $9,562,468. 17

MAUSA received $2,025,786 from the Globus Relief Fund in 2019. 18
