The Lynn Handleman Charitable Foundation (also known as Left Tilt Fund) is an Oakland, California-based grantmaking organization that supports a broad group of left-of-center advocacy organizations. The foundation gives to labor union-aligned “worker centers,” artistic organizations, radical environmentalist groups, and groups aligned with the anti-Israel “boycott, divestment, and sanctions” (BDS) pressure campaign. [1]
Grantmaking
The Lynn Handleman Charitable Foundation supports a number of far-left groups through grants and disbursements; an archive of its website indicated that its grantmaking areas included civil liberties, prisoners’ and ex-convicts’ rights, support for racial minorities, radical environmentalism, left-wing economic and housing policy, activist arts programs, labor union agendas, and far-left international outreach. [2]
Grantees include organizations from the far left of the American political spectrum: In 2017 the group made grants to the Anti Police-Terror Project, Alliance for Global Justice, and Critical Resistance. [3] In 2016 the LHCF gave support to the Project on Youth and Non-Military Activities,[4] a left-wing organization dedicated to reducing enlistments in the United States Military. [5]
Associations with BDS
The Left Tilt Fund is notable for funding organizations involved in the “boycott, divestment, and sanctions” pressure campaign to delegitimize the State of Israel. [6] In 2017, the foundation made grants to Jewish Voice for Peace and the Middle East Children’s Alliance, both groups that have supported BDS activities. [7][8]
