The Jeff T. Green Family Foundation (Green Family Foundation) is a left-of-center organization that focuses on education policy issues, with an emphasis on utilizing data science and predictive tools to address race-centric policy issues. In addition, the foundation has provided funding for organizations that engage in LGBT-interest advocacy.

The Green Family Foundation was founded in 2020 by Jeff T. Green, the co-founder and CEO of the Trade Desk, a company that provides real-time online advertising services for companies. 1

Finances

In 2020, the foundation received $9,850,800 in contributions. 2

LGBT Support

In 2021 Jeff Green authored a letter directed at the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, criticizing the church for a host of issues, including the church’s opposition to same-sex marriage. 3 Green then announced that the Green Family Foundation’s first major contribution would a $600,000 grant to Equality Utah, 4 an LGBT advocacy organization that has challenged laws preventing teachers from discussing LGBT issues in public schools and laws allowing private businesses to decide whom they wish to employ in their businesses. 5

Education Policy

Minority Dropout Rate Studies

The Green Family Foundation works with universities to address issues such as higher drop-out rates for minority students. 6

In a 2019 study conducted with California State University Channel Islands, the foundation found that a single drop/fail/withdrawal grade as a freshman drops a student’s chance of graduating to 60%, and two drop/fail/withdrawal grades reduces the chance of graduating to 40%. 7 The Green Family Foundation has recommended “intervention” policies for students to address academic problems and poor performance issues early on in a student’s academic life. 8

Scholarship

The Green Family Foundation has established a scholarship program with California State University Channel Islands (CSU-Channel Islands). 9 CSU-Channel Islands is a federally recognized Hispanic-serving institution, defined as a university where 25% or more of the students have a Hispanic background. 10 This status qualifies the institution for special taxpayer-funded grants. 11

The scholarship from the Green Family Foundation for the 2022-2023 academic year provided $20,000 to 50 students to be distributed over four years. 12 In order to qualify for the grant, beyond attending CSU-Channel Islands, applicants must have performed at an average or below average level in high school — between 2.00-2.99 cumulative GPA — and the applicant must be a first-generation student, defined as neither parent having earned a baccalaureate degree. 13

The grant is available for United States citizens, permanent residents, and undocumented migrants. 14

Leadership

Jeff Green is the president of the Jeff T. Green Family Foundation. Green is the co-founder and CEO of the Trade Desk, a company that competes with Facebook and Google to provide real-time online advertising services for companies seeking to market their products. 15
