Background
GoFundMe.org was launched in 2017 by for-profit digital crowdfunding platform GoFundMe as a fundraising tool for disaster relief following the impact of Hurricane Harvey in August that year. According to the group’s website, as of 2026 several public figures are listed as “past and current partners” for the organization This include Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Laurene Powell Jobs, Ellen DeGeneres, Deepak Chopra, Yashar Ali, and former first lady Michelle Obama. Listed partner organizations include the Obama Foundation, the Asian American Foundation, Immigrant Families Together, the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund, and Welcome.US. Listed corporate partners include Netflix, Google, and Microsoft. 4

In 2023, GoFundMe.org spent $11.35 million on campaigns including Maui wildfire response efforts, hurricane responses, “maintaining Ukraine humanitarian support,” “supporting welcome refugees,” “education programs for girls abroad with the Obama Foundation,” and “uplifting marginalized communities such as AAPI [Asian American and Pacific Islander] and more.” 5
As of 2026, GoFundMe.org is working with the Asian American Foundation’s AAPI Emergency Relief Fund, the AAPI Community Fund, the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund; Welcome.US’s Welcome Fund, the Community Sponsorship Hub‘s (CHS’) Sponsor Fund, and the Barbie Dream Gap Project. 6
