Greater New Orleans Foundation is a grant maker in New Orleans that operates as a pass-through entity for donors to give to a variety of local, regional, and national nonprofits. 1 The foundation’s grant recipients are largely non-political or left-of-center nonprofits focused on education, health care, environmentalism, LGBT issues, and more. 2

History

Greater New Orleans Foundation is an outgrowth of the Community Chest of New Orleans, established in 1923. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the foundation created the Community Revitalization Fund, which it credits with developing nearly 9,500 housing units. In the wake of a major oil spill in the gulf coast in 2010, the foundation created the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. 3

As of 2023, the foundation managed more than 900 funds. 4

Activities

Greater New Orleans Foundation is a grantmaker that operates as a major pass-through funder to numerous other nonprofits in New Orleans, the surrounding region, and beyond. 5 Grantees include nonprofits involved in education, health care, environmental activism, conservation, poverty reduction, and more. 6 The foundation lists its primary program areas as civic leadership, economic opportunity, environment, nonprofit leadership and effectiveness, workforce, and disaster response and restoration. 7

The foundation has five primary initiatives. These include GiveNOLA Day, a one-day online event to inspire charitable giving; 8 Impact 100, a program to promote woman leadership in nonprofits through charitable giving; 9 the Freeman Challenges, a program to help nonprofits establish endowments; 10 the LGBTQ Fund launched in 2016 to be a continual source of funding for nonprofits led by and serving LGBT-identifying individuals; 11 and Emerging Philanthropists of New Orleans, devoted to inspiring young people to become lifelong philanthropists. 12

The foundation’s core values include left-of-center priorities such as equity and inclusion. 13

Grantmaking

In 2021, Greater New Orleans Foundation’s largest grants included $630,626 to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, $282,805 to the Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund, $246,674 to the Academy of the Sacred Heart New Orleans Foundation, $239,076 to Bridge House in New Orleans, $235,026 to Children’s Hospital  of New Orleans, $185,800 to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux in Louisiana,  $135,872 to College Beyond in New Orleans, $125,000 to Bless Your Heart Nonprofit Corporation in Larose Louisiana, $122,874 to the Center for the Innovative Training of Youth in New Orleans,  $112,870 to Audubon Nature Institute Inc. in New Orleans, $111,500 to Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, $109,446 to Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, and more. In 2021, the Greater New Orleans Foundation made a total of 641 grants to nonprofit organizations ranging from $5,041 to $630,626. 14

Also in 2021, Greater New Orleans Foundation donated to many nonprofits known for their left-of-center activism, including $23,436 to the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights advocacy group criticized for focusing its analysis of anti-Semitism on political conservatives; $93,229 to Doctors Without Borders, an international aid organization that is primarily nonpolitical but supports abortion and other left-leaning causes; $5,550 to the Environmental Defense Fund, an environmentalist group known for its advocacy for public policies concerning global warning and a left-wing political agenda; $7,800 to Greenpeace Fund, a nonprofit associated with Greenpeace that raises money to support Greenpeace’s environmentalist agenda; $5,500 to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the public charity component of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBT activism organization; and others. 15

During the same period, Greater New Orleans Foundation also donated to nonprofits known for their right-of-center positions, including $25,000 to the Federalist Society, an educational society of mostly conservative and libertarian lawyers and law students. 16

People

The president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation is Andy Kopplin. 17 Kopplin was previously the deputy mayor and chief administrative officer for the city of New Orleans from 2010-2016 under Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D). Kopplin also worked as a senior advisor to Wendy Kopp, the Founder and CEO of Teach for America. From 2006 to 2008, Kopplin was the founding executive director of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, created to manage recovery efforts after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. 18

Funding

In 2021, Greater New Orleans Foundation received $205,504,242 in gifts, grants, contributions, and membership fees.  The organization also has a roughly $278 million endowment that generated a net $34,442,345 in investment earnings in 2021. 19
